The Church Endures Persecution.
STEPHEN BECOMES THE FIRST CHRISTIAN MARTYR
A O . ?
By NEWMAN CAMPBELL
THE FIRST episode in today's
lesson shows how full of love,
understanding and sense of right
doing ruled the early Christian
church.
When some of the Greek Chris
tians complained that their wid
ows were not receiving their fair
share of the community posses
sions, instead of disputes and
arguments, the 12 apostles ap
pointed seven men to set the mat
ter right, saying "It is npt rea
son that we should leave the word
of God, and serve tables."
After praying, they appointed
Stephen, and six others?all with
Grecian names?to look into the
matter and set it right. Would
that Christian congregations to
day could settle their differences
In this spirit of love and justice!
"Stephen, full of faith and
power, did great wonders and
miracles among the people." Then
some Jews in the synagogue who

came "Jesus?the Just One; of
whom ye have been now the be*
trayers and murderers."
When they heard these sayings
they were "cut to the heart, and
they gnashed their teeth at him."
However, Stephen, "being full
of the Holy Ghost, looked up
steadfastly Into heaven and saw
the glory of God, and Jesus stand*
ing on the right hand of God,
And said, "Behold, I see the
heavens opened, and the Son of
man standing on the right hand
of God."
At that the crowd went wild.
They rushed upon him, cast him
out of the city and stoned him.
In the midst of the stoning,
Stephen called out, saying, "Lord
Jesus, receive my spirit."' Then
he knelt, saying, like Jesus upon
the cross, "Lord, lay not this sin
to (heir charge." And when he
had said this "he "fell asleep."
A young man was present to
see Stephen stoned to death and
people laid their clothes at his

had come from other countries
which gave the synagogue the
name of the Synagogue of the
Libertines, disputed with Steph
en, but "were not able to resist
the wisdom and the spirit by
which he spoke."
So they induced some evil men
to testify that Stephen had
spoken "blasphemous words
against Moses, and against God."
These men stirred up the peo
ple and the elders and they
caught Stephen and brought him
to the council. There the high
priest asked him it it was true
that he had said that "this Jesus
of Nazareth shall destroy this
place, and shall change the cus
toms which Moses delivered us." I
Stephen sat still and those that
looked at him saw his face like
that of an angel. Then Stephen
reviewed the past of the Jewish
nation from the time of Abraham
to the time of Jesus and showed
how in every generation the
prophets sent by God had been
-ersecuted and murdered. Then

feet. The mm was Saul, who con
aented to the death of this saint
ly man. Later this same Saul
persecuted the Christians, enter
ing every house and dragging
people out and putting them In
prison.
As it was with Jesus after His
crucifixion, friends cared for His
body. So it was with Stephen.
"Devout men carried Stephen to
his burial and made great lamen
tation."
And this Saul, later converted,
became one of the greatest of
Christian preachers, and eventu
ally was martyred.
We do not have to suffer perse
cution and martyrdom in our day,
hut we do have our moments of
suffering. Do we bear them with
the spirit of 8tephen, calling upon
Jesus to help us to suffer cheer
fully?
After the death of Stephen the
Christian group in Jerusalem was
scattered, and so people in other
cities and the countryside heard
of Christ and the religion spread,

l||r LIKE FATHER-LIKE SOU W '
T
Something's in the making here. Maybe it's a garden.
Maybe it's nothing more than a ditch. But what really
counts is that father and son are working together
happily.
Sonny may be more hindrance than help just now. But,
says Dad patiently, "How ever will the boy learn if he doesn't
do?"
When you watch, with ebbing patience your child's fum
bling efforts to imitate yours,do you ever think about your
heavenly Father's patience with you when you are in the
wrong?
He's right there, working alongside you too, wanting
to show you how to carry on, and staying close by in
case you get into trouble.
W If you keep in touch with Him through prayer
and regular church attendance, you will learn from
Him how to live, just as your child learns from

THE CHURCH FOR ALL . ...
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is the greatest (actor on earth (or
the building oi character and good citizenship.
It is a storehouse ol spiritual ralues. Without a
strong Church, neither democracy nor civilisation
can survive. There are lour sound reasons why
every person should attend services regularly
and support the Church They are: (1) For his
own sake (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the
sake of his community and nation. (4) For the
sake oi the Church itself, which needs his moral
and material support. Plan to go to church regu
larly and read your Bible daily.
