Revives Ancient Tongue
SEATTLE, Wash. (AP)?A Seattle
diamond merchant spends his spare
time trying to reassemble an anci
ent language which he says might
be called the "grandmother of
Hebrew." Arthur Lagawler already
knows 17 languages. He holds a
doctorate in philosophy and a
rabbinical degree.
When his family was forced by
the Nazis to leave Antwerp,
Belgium, he managed to save his
collection of 6,000 books. He has
been teaching Hebrew literature
at the University of Washington
and spending much of his time in
scholarly study. One of his hobbles
is deliving into the mysteries of
Ugaritic, a language he says was
in use probably 2,000 years before
Christ.
"It is the language from which
was developed Phoenician, fore
runner of Hebrew," he says.
Tablets bearing the strange writ
ings of the ancient kingdom of
Ugarit, in northern Syria, were
unearthed in 1028. Lagawler re
ceived photostats of them three
years ago. From the inscriptions,
he is trying to develop a Ugaritic
grammar. *
