Mountaineers Knock Canton Out Of Unbeaten Class With 11-9 Victory
Waynesville !
Gets Total
Of 14 Hits
I
A . fired-up WaynesviUe High
baseball team shelled two Canton
pitchers for 14 hits and a 11*9 vic
tory at Canton Friday afternoon to '
hand the powerful Black Bears
their first loss of the IBM season.
The hero for the Mountaineers
was pitcher George Mitchell who
struck out H Canton batters and
gave up only Ave hits while his
teammates knocked Sonny Warrdn
out of the box and continued to
hit the bait hard after Dewayne
Milner took the mound in the third
inning.
Both teams had trouble holding
on to the ball?WaynesviUe being
charged with six errors, Canton
with seven.
After both sides failed to get any
runs in the first inning, the Black
Bears went out in front with three
runs in the bottom of the second.
However, the Mountaineers bounc
ed back for five runs in the third
inning and sent Warren to the
dugout.
In that inning, Byrd and Lane 1
walked. Ezell was safe on the
pitcher's eror, Davis Whs safe on a
fielder's choice, scoring Byrd; Bal
lance flew to center field, scoring
Lane; Carver singled, scoring Davis
and Ezell; Hill bounced out, and
Wright singled, scoring Carver.
WaynesviUe added three more
in the fourth inning on singles by
Ezell, Davis, Hill. Mitchell, and
Wright, and a double by Ballance
In the" fifth inning, WTHS got
one more run as Ezell doubled,
Davis flew out. sending Ezell to
third, and Ballance flew out, send
ing Ezell across the plate. Ezell's
hit actually was good enough for
three bases, but the outfielder fail
ed to touch second ba9e and had
to go back to that safk.
The Mountaineers scored their
winning runs in the seventh Inning
as Davis was safe on the shortstop's
error, Ballance tripled, and then
scored on Hill's infield oat.
Canton added three more in the
bottom of the seventh as Powell
walked. Amos and Cannon struck
out, Rhinehart and West were safe
on errors, and Deweese, Clark, and
Milner walked. Ballance then came
in and threw one pitch to Stamey,
who popped up for the third out
and the end of the ball game.
The win over Canton Friday was
the first scored by WaynesviUe
since the season of 1952 when the
Mountaineers whipped the Black
Bears in two games, 8-5, and 2-1.
In the past three years, the Can
ton nine has won the Blue Ridge
Conference title each season.

Bob Kelly Has Been Using Firestone ReCaps Op His
Cabs For 6 Years ?
WHY? Here's What Bob
?? ? ? Says About Them' - - -
I have been using Firestone re-caps for several years . . . and for the pest
6 years we have used Firestone transport re-caps exclusively on all Kelly
Cabs. In my opinion you can't buy a tire that will give you better mileage
... in fact, one of onr cabs has been driven over 25.000 miles with a set of
Firestone re-caps. They are entirely dependable in any weather ? snow,
sleet, rain, or shine. Our cabs are on the road in all kinds of weather, and on
. all kinds of roads, and we haVe never had any trouble with tires capped by
Firestone. For long mileage and low cost you just can't beat Firestone
re-caps.
YOU-CAN SAVE MONEY ON TIRES, TOO ?
