Mountaineers Whip Reynolds, 38-0;
Clash With Canton Friday Night
By BOB CONWAY
Playing under wraps and with
?eserves in action a good part of j
he time, the Mountaineers scored |
an easy 38-0 win over the Reynolds
Rockets here Friday night, capital-!
izing on the visitors' fumbles to run
up a 26-0 lead at halftime.
Just as in the Bethel game, the
Mountaineers wasted little time in
scoring?pushing across their first
touchdown with less than four min
utes elapsed in the first quarter
That six-pointer came after Sam j
Lane ran a Revnolds punt back to
the Rockets' 20, Palmer picked up i
nine yards, and then Charles Rob-1
inson took a pitchout from Lane
and skirted left end into paydirt.
Hugh Grasty added the extra point
with a plunge through center.
A short time later, end Jack
Lewis set tip another Waynesville
touchdown tiy recovering a Rev- ?
nolds fumble on the 20 yard-line.
On the second play from scrim
mage, Neal Palmer rammed
through the line to the three, and
then went over from there. Grasty
again plunged for the extra point.
After Reynolds picked up a first
down with a pass and a lateral, a
Rocket back fumbled a handoff and
Jerrv Nichols recovered for WTHS
on the RHS 42.

end Tom Sparks who juggled the 1
ball and let it escape from his
grasp, but the other Mountaineer
end. Jimmy Fowler, right beside
Sparks, caught the pigskin in the
air and raced across for the touch
down. A 15-yard holding penalty
stymied the try for the extra point.
Waynesville tallied another TD
in the second quarter on a drive
from the Waynesville 46. with War
ren and Parris picking up most of
the yardage down to the goal line
where Warren bucked over and
Holder plunged for the extra point.
The Mountaineers narrowly
missed another touchdown late in
the second quarter when Sparks
caught a pass from Lane on the
Reynolds two-yard line, but
Waynesville was ruled offside and
the visitors took over the ball.
Trying to score, Reynolds took
to the air and Grastv intercepted
one fling and ran across the goal
line, but the officials ruled that
he stopped out of bounds and the
ball was brought back to the 20.
The half ended seconds later.
As the second half opened.
Vaynesville returned the kiekoff to
heir own 36. picked up three first
towns and then Grasty found a
iole over right tackle and sprinted]
!6 yards for the touchdown. The
ittonipt at extra point was no good.
Reynolds came back after the
ciekofT. got one first down on a
3ass, but then fumbled and Jim
ifall recovered on the 35.
Three plays later Ncal Palmer
skirted left end for a touchdown.
Attempting the extra point. Lane
was thrown short of the goal.
Midway in the third quarter.
Reynolds made its longest drive to
the game by picking up two first
downs on three completed passes,
but Lane's interception on the
Waynesville 42 ended the Ilocket
advance.
The Mountaineers then rolled
up three first downs, but lost the
ball on a fumble on the Reynolds
40.
j With time running out, the
Rockets tried one last desperation
j pass, but Grasty intercepted as the
game ended.
Pressbox Paragraphs
The excellence of Waynesville's
line play in the Reynolds game la
shown by the fact that the Rockets
never got past midfleld until late
in the third quarter, and picked
up only one first down on the
ground all evening. The longest
Reynolds run was a nine-yard
sprint through tackle in the second j'
half, when reserves were in the
WTHS lineup.
Charlie Robinson did an excel-,
lent job subbing at halfback for!
co-captain Carroll Hooper, who
watched the fracas from the side
'ines. Robinson is a fast starter and
fits in well with the Mountaineer j
T-formation assault.
Reserve halfbacks Bill Moore. I
David Watron, and Tommy Parris
also showed up well against Rey
nolds as Coach Jaynes emptied his
bench.
For their first two games, the
Highlanders have done particular
ly well on Idckoffs, all except one
boot going deep into enemy ter
ritory or over the goal,
Waynesville tackling continued
on the enthusiastic side against
Reynolds; and the boys ought to be
ready Friday night to grapple with
j those burley Black Bears.
I On<> of the best tackles of the
evening -was the one turned in by
Bruce Davis on a kickofT. That one
was so hard it even hurt the spec
tator*.
