Hazelwood s Heartbeat Reflects The Tempo Of Church And Industry
7 Churches
Thriving In
Hazelwood
By At ties Fit/hush Shapter
You can tell the time of day
in Hazelwood by its church belts
and its factory whistles. Most of
the employed population is work
ing at one of the dozen industries
wiiich are the backbone of the
town's economy?and they, with
their wives and their children
and maybe grannie or a visiting
uncle, turn out for regular at
tendance at one of Hazelwood's
seve^^urches.
uBi population of about
2200 The town's seven churches
boast a combined membership of
025. Many more residents at
tend services outside the town
limits. "Come go to church with
me," is a popular salutation.
Church members lake a friendly
interest in the services at other
churches and visiting back and
forth is frequent.
A dozen industries provide the
vitamins for Hazelwood's Jack
and-the-beanstalk growth ? and
the industries are doing consid
erable growing themselves. Some
s of the newest comers are elbow
ing some of the most deeply
rooted for the position of mak
ing the greatest contribution to
Hazelwood's economic life.
Industrial life centers around
the Southern Railway, B and I'
Motor Lines, A. C. Lawrence
Leather, Boyle and Filkington,
Unagusta Manufacturing, Smoky
Mountains Fertilizer, Allison and
Duncan Tire and Oil companies,
Wellco Shoe and Wcllco Bo
Search, Carolina Fower and
Light. Southern Bell Telephone
and the Liner Company. Not to
be ignored, even though it lies
just outside the town limits, is
the Dayton Rubber plant, which
has a large number of Hazelwood
employees.
Hazelwood folk do not spend
all their time, however, at work
or at church. Important in the
life of the town are a number
of civic organizations. Active
among t,hese are the Boosters,
the Boosterettes, the Lions, the
Parent-Teacher Association, the
American Legion and Boy and
Girl Scout troops.

Hazelwood Been Active In F.C. Program 5 Years
KEEPING HAZEUVOOI) Clean is one of the
major projects of the l iner Carolina committee
working with town officials. Weeds are cut from
vacant lots: streets are washed, and garbage col
lected on a systematic schedule throughout the
town.
Improvements Of

Hazelwood citizens have used

Hazelwood Has Four Maior 'Finer Carolina' Proiects
MANY HOURS of fun are being derived from this piece of play
ground equipment on the new H awl wood playground, one of the
Finer Carolina projects.
Four major projects arc lur
ing sponsored by four organiza
tions this year as part of Hazel
wood's Finer Carolina Program,
but th *ir subdivisions are legion.
The Hazelwood Boosters Club,
the Boosterettes. the I'uivnt
Teacher Association and the Ha
zelwood Lions have each outlined
a program which they are doing
their best to bring to completion.
The Boosters are well along in
their plan of securing land and
building a community clubhouse.
They have purchased the land,
thanks to their rolling up their
shirt sleeves in sponsoring a
county-wide 4th of July celebra
tion, which, with their other
fund-raising activities, put them
over the top.
The Booslei ectes' goal is town
improvements Tluv st.rtid the
butt rolling toward having the
entire town zoned. The local zon
ing commission lias completed its
work and final approval is ex
pected any day.
The Boosterettes also decided
to get more people to attend
church, and it is a fact that every
Hazelwood church lias reported
an increase m membership dur
ing the past year.
Hazelwood's new street mark
ers were another project of the
Boosterettes. Thanks to their ef
forts, every corner is now clearly
marked by a concrete post paint
ed with the names of the inter
secting streets.
Finally, (he Boosterettes are
devoting themselves to the im
provement and maintenance of
the Scout Hut. Located in the
recreation area around the school,
it is designed as a meeting place
for Boy and Girl Scout troops
or for any other young people's
group.
The Parent-Teacher Associa
tion. as is natural, is chiefly .con
cerned with batter facilities and
greater safety in the school area.
They pushed to completion the
paving of the play area on the
school grounds, giving youngstors
an all-weather surface for bas
ketball. tennis and other activi
ties.
In addition, they initiated a
number of changes in loading
and unloading children at the
school. Unloading is now per
_ - 9
mitted only on the school side
of the street, so that no child
will have to dodge traffic as he
runs at the sound of the last
hell. The opposite side of the
street now has signs posted: "No
Unloading." A new road has been
constructed to swing around be
hind the school All school buses
must use this lane for loading
and unloading, thus relieving
congestion in the street and. as
in the other project, permitting
the children to reach their class
rooms without going through
traffic.
The Hazel wood Lions Club
gains most of its fame from its
sponsorship of a youngsters' base
