Dfc* 9r*a*y By JANE r. ADS WASHINGTON ? It was an en thusiastic Gwen Anderson who came from her home in nearby Falls Church, Va., to take her turn presiding over the Artists' Mart, of j which she ts one of the eight opera tive members. "The success we've had this sum mer has been fabulous and shows Washington has indeed become art conscious," she said. "We've sold many paintings, sculpture and oth er works, not only our own but of numerous other young artists. We've been asked to exhibit in shows. Some of us have won awards." MrV Anderson, wifo of a De fense Department engineer and a realistic water eolorist and enamel artist herself, had just won an award at the Museum of Natural History for an elongated 64-inch "El Grecp-ish" figure in enamel. Mrs. Anderson is a relative new comer to the Mart group, which held its first meeting in 1951 un der a fig tree in a Georgetown garden to plan a cooperative, with1 members sharing profits and res-! ponsibilities. and provide a "con-1 venient, informal outlet" for the! worlc of Washington artists, "The Mart gives the young art ists a chance to show their Work I in nice surroundings and encour-! ages them," Mrs. Anderson said.1 "As a result some of them have i been enormously successful. The i artists who have their work on con signment with us?we have more than 150?have time and again ex pressed appreciation that their work can be seen at so convenient a counter the year around. Many have stated that the Mart was the first to sell their work." Only one man is a member of the group of eight, which repre sents painters, sculptors, potters, textile and jewelry designers. He is versatile Gustav Trois, who has won more than 50 prizes for his work in oils, water color, etchings, woodblocks and so on. "While there is a great demand for small articles such as jewelry, ceramics, prints and watercolors selling for less than $25." Mrs. An derson said, "'it has been gratify ing to discover that the buying nublic is looking also for larger items." ?? I Patient Husband MEXICO CITY (AP> ?
