Green Fields Show Oil Progress In Conservation By ROY R. BECK Soil Conservation Service The beautiful green landscape of Haywood County has appeared since the leaves fell from our hardwood trees. All shades of green are - visible where various kinds of cover crops, pastures and even alfalfa have made excellent growth during the warm fall weather. The beauty of our county this fall is a 1 tribute to the conservation joD 1 our landowners are doing. Unfortunately, here and there we see brown, bare fields left exposed ' to the winter rains, as well as freezing and thawing by our rapid ly changing weather. And through out our county we see the raw scars left by earth-moving equipment ; Red subsull on road banks has al ready started sp'wtng with the first freeze The next rain will carry it down hill to choke up ditches ami 1 streams and eventually add more thousands of cubic yards of silt to help fill Lake Junaluska and Wal ters Reservoir. If we are going to reduce the load of silt carried by our streams j and river, we have to attack at the source of the silt, bare land ex posed to rain, freezing and thaw in*. One man who Is doing just this is Hubert Hipps of Thickety Com munity. Mr Hipps started by seed ing the steeper land on his place to alfalfa. For several years, one or more aeres of eroded land have been going into alfalfa so that now about half his steeper crop land is covered with alfalfa. Mr. Hipps hopes to get it all seeded during the next three years. Hy that time, his new farm pond will be sur rounded by alfalfa and pasture. By what better method cart a man use his hill land fully, yet protect and improve It? But this isn't all (lie conservation you will And on the Hipps place. Last spring, right after a logging road was bulldozed up the side of Hipps mountain boundary. Hill seeded rye grass to keep the road from washing out He also dug turnout ditches about every 100 feet to keep water from turning the road into a gully. Mr. Hipps plans to turn the flatter areas of cut-over land Into pasture and spot plant white pine and yellow poplar on the steeper slopes. Namesakes CHARLESTON. \V V'a 'AIM?
