learned copper enameling of jewelry and pastel painting this fall in an adult edu

Clyde Man Cited For Fine
Work With Seabees On Big
Project At Cape Hatteras

Class Steelworker David Smith
Rogers for "outstanding personal
contribution" to the construction
of the U.S. Navy's multi-million
dcllar secret facility here the com
manding officer of the Navy's
Seventh Battalion Seabees went
one unusual step further and
added "you are hereby recom
mended for advancement in the
rating of Chief Petty Officer."
Commendation of the lanky
mountaineer, a veteran of 15 years
active or reserve service in the
Navy occurred at a special inuster
of the Seabee's 200-man detach
ment and the citation was read by
Lieut. Blake W. VanLeer, Jr., who
commands the outfit which will
begin moving out of here this week
three months ahead of Its esti
mated working schedule. VanLeer
is the son of the former dean
of the School of Engineering at
State College who was president
of Georgia Tech at the time of his
death earlier this year.

have been on duty here, the Sixth
; arriving in May. 1955. The Sixth
j was replaced by the Seventh curly

I supervision of a crew of about 40
! men in the rection of the steel

secret equipment in the two main ,
buildings. When the citation was
read the commanding officer did
not restrain his command from a
spontaneous expression of ap
proval Rogers is, in a very quiet
way. popular with every man in
the command.
Rogers is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Rogers of Clyde, aiid the
husband of Mrs. Helen Lyle Rog
er.-. who lives at Gaifney. S. C .
during the time of his active serv
ice He joined the Navy shortly
after graduation from the high
school at Waynesville in 1941 and
ha continued on reserve status
since the end of the war Although
his period of active duty is expir
ing this week he has been urged
by his superiors to continue on
duty. He will return to his home
county to ponder the matter before
unking up his mind.

Senator Mansfield is a very cap

foreign affairs are always highly
regarded arid his opinion often
sought. One thing that has im
pressed me is that Senator Mans
field is a self-made individual,
working himself up the ladder of
success in such a manner* as to
c munend him to Democrats and
Republicans alike. He is a states
