In most sections of North Caro

f ive better results than when seed
i a in the spring. , . ' i
The recommended seeding date
for the coastal plain and the lower
Fiedmont area is in September. In
the 'upper Piedmont,' seeding
should be between August IS and
September 15, ' r '
.'-But in the mountain . regions
where the altitude is above 2,500
feet, spring seeding gives the best
results ,saya P. H. Kime, agrono
mist at N. C. State College, s ;
Alfalfa requires a fertile aoU, he
'pointed out. Where' ; the i, soil is
somewhat run .down, it is advlsa-
i ,ble to build It up before attempt
ing to start a good stand of alfal
fa. Do not attempt to grow al
falfa on sandy soils, he warned.
-v The sou' may be improved -by
- adding manure or growing crim-
t son clover, vetch, or any of the
other clovers to turn under as a
green manure crop, kime stated.
'.' Farmers' iwhose soil, la of ; low
fertility, and .who : wish to start
alfalfa, should begin this fall; to
' prepare the land for alfalfa plant
ing next year -or the " following
yea, Kime stated. 'r'..i :
Jt the soil is in good condition,
l' the alfalfa may be seeded at once.
Given pie proper are and fertihV
ration, it should produce a good
j stand next year. , :;: ; -v U-Jt- -'

servation, and the economical pro
riuption of crons and livestock, al-
falfa is considered by many as the

practice In that it insures . the

to roost and tends toward higher
egg production. ,
Question: What is the bert rate
for seeding alfalfa and when should
the seed be planted?
Answers . At least 25 - pounds
and preferably 30 pounds of seed
should be planted to the acre for
best results. A good stand is worth
more than 5 or 10 pounds of seed
and it ia therefore important to
use a few extra pounds in seeding.
Best seeding dates in the coastal
plain and lower piedmont sections
are from September 1 to .30. In
the upper! 'piedmont - the dates are
from August 15 to September 15.
'Spring planting is advisable In, the
higher mountain sections.
