After passing sentence on the negroes Judge Grady commended the Jury for its patience in hear ing and examining the evidence submitted, and thanked the huge crowd in the courtroom for ; its orderliness throughout the trial. The negroes wen taken direo ly to the state penitentiary, in Ea leigh to await the date set , for their death. ' . The last case to be' tried in Kenansville in which the defend' ant was sentenced to die, and in which the sentence was earned out, was in 1905, when William Carter, negro, was tried in v the JTovember term of Superior Court for raping a white girl child near Wallace,) received the death pen alty, and was hanged in the jail yard on Deoember 20th of the same year. However, there have been two or three cases since that, time in which the defend ant received the death penalty but succeeded in . having it v changed. The crowd attending the case was one of the largest ever to attend court in Puplia County, probably exceeding that even of the Stephen English wife murder casewhich lasted for two weeks. f t 1 1 vt- ; c 1 1 Sent s-ii'i j t follow tier', tl from Cie C:- "j : the Kao Cia'y i'. a i the left ftere t-1 c.t t woods and out to CJ v's School.
