Kirk, Surgeon General of the Army, an nounced today that there, is a cri tical shortage of nurses in the jArmy and that there has been a disappointing response to the call for 10,000 additional nurses who must be recruited within the next few months. He said the Medical Depart ment had expected to recruit at least ,ow nurses during Septem ber, but only 500 had applied for I commissions. I There are now 209.000- civilian nurses exclusive of 112,000 stu dent nurses. In the U. S. and Gea Kirk suggested that to reduce the number by 10,000 would not crip ple nursing services for the civi lian population. "Surely there are 10,000 graduate, registered nurses who are willing to join the Army to help out in this emergency," he said.
