""Although North " Carolina " is
now on top of 1 the world In the
production and sale of tobacco,
we must not allow ourselves to be
lulled Into sleepy contentment by
this great success with which we
tire now blessed," said Agriculture
Commissioner Kerr Scott recently
as . he pointed out . the need for
continuing tobacco research on a
greater scale than ever before,
and urged the re-establishment
and expansion of this State's ex
port trade.
"You can't beat ihe quality of
tobacco grown right here in this
State, and our farmers are at the
top in production, curing, and
marketing skills," said Scott In
declaring that "our folks deserve
the best advice money can buy in
our efforts to keep North Caro-1
lina In its position as the Number '
One tobacco State of the nation."
worth Carolina must, through
research, keep abreast of manu
facturers' requirements. By so do
ing, we can help to maintain a
strong demand for North Carolina
tobacco and thus assure our farm
ers of a fair return for their pro
duct," said Scott
He explained that greater pro
duction of burley tobacco should
be encouraged, pointing out that
the crop this season is twice as
large as any burley crop produced
in the State prior to 1943.
"We must not forget that Tur
kish tobacco is now on the way in
?Mh PaMlIni anil t-h rvsocihili-
ties for this crop In the moun
talns are unlimited." '.
' .''When tobacco is mentioned
throughout the world, people
should be made to think of North
Carolina Tobacco," said Scott, ad
ding that this might be done
through an annual tobacco 'festi
val, a Tobacco Bowl " game, and
the advertising' of tobacco pro
duced in this State throughout
the world.

Be Thankful
In our United States of 140 million people and many
million square miles we speak in mpny an,ruC'es and
creeds. Yet, we speak in one voice in our devotion to
Thanksgiving:.
Our pre-Revolution colonies declared days of
Thanksgiving on nine occasions to give thanks for their
lives after famines, massacres and countless other hard
ships. George Washington set aside the last Thursday in
November as a measure of thanks durine the American
Revolution for the few pitiful victories the ragged Am
erican armies gained.
We cling to our Day for Thanksgiving as one nation
of people who have mutually shared the hardships of
birth, growth and maturity.
We give our thanks humbly
and sincerely. For we know our
blessings are a right wo
through sacrifices and grief. A
right that has be preyed bgr
