I7-; Luk M:MS7, Sl.r2; John 11: li-17. MEMORY BEUCT10N-W ought to otj God ritlier thn mm. AcU S:a. Men are of primary interest to I Qod. Our Lord iesus bas always been concerned about men, eager that they should be HHod with all the fullness of His love and the beauty of His grace, lie It is who stands by In the hour of weakness and failure tp give renewed strength to Hli repentant child. The life of Peter runs the gamut of- human feelings from the height nf In and assurance to the depth of despair. He learned many of bis lessons the bard way-by a siuDDorn struggle in the school of experience but he came out into a glorious and. triumphant faith In Christ I A New Name and a ureal uoa- fession (John 1:42; Mark 8:27-28). When a roan comes to Jesus in true fslth and devotion he becomes a changed man. The Bible speaks of it as a new birth, a radical change from darkness to llghf, a going from death to life. A name is Important in Ita bear ing on the Individual's lue. mow often parents hinder or embarrass a child with an unworiny name. or a foolish imitation oi we nam of some giddy Individual in the pub lic eye, but lacking real character. Simon, Which means "hearing was completed by the name Peter meaning 'rock," a token of this chanea of direction of life. The Lord gave It to him, and He knew all about the man, his past, presem and future,- the longings of his heart which were to be fulfilled in serv ice for Him. The great confession of Christ (Mark 8), which became the foun dation of the church (see Matt. 1C: 14), was the expression of the heart of thit solrituallv chansed man. He knew what the Lord had done for him. and knew that it was the work of God, not the influence of some philosophy of man, nor the re sult of fallowing a great teacher or an examnle. "Thou art the Christl" Such is the conviction and confession of the man or woman with the reborn uiei IL Aa Awful Failure aad a lleep Repentanoe (Luke 22:6447, 61. 62). Peter had vaunted himself in de claring his everlssting loyalty to the rjrd. Hla old self-satisfaction and boastmlness bad overcome him. He had even come to the ftace wnere be felt eapable"bf' lelltng IKI Lord that He was mistaken. He made the grave mistake ol fo. lowing the Lord "afar off" (v. 5. He did not intend to deny the Lord, but be had allowed himself to get into a position where K was hard ti stand up for Him. The lesson (or us is evident. II , want nur faith to be steady ami true in the hour of the enemy's at tack we must not get far from the Lord, nor may we And out fellow ship with this Chrtst-denylnn world Peter's strong- denial of our Lord, bis use of language unbecom ing to a believer, bis quirit false hoods all these mark the thing be did for what he knew it to be when he beard the cock crow s terrible sin against the Christ. The look of Jesus doubtless car ried conviction, but one somehow feels that it was even more a look of tenderness and of assurance of the Lord's promised prsyers for him. The thing which brought the tears of repentance was the remem brance of the Lord's own words (v. 01). It Is the recollection of the Word-of God which brings a man to bis senses spiritually. Peters repentance was resi. so we find that Peter was restored and reinstated In his place of service for tha Lsrd. . . m. A CamoieU Restoration and aa Obedient Bervioa (John 21:19-17). 3m turn met Peter on the first Eas ts moraine-, so ha was assured of forgiveness. But Peter and the others . bad returned to their oia uia as fishermen. They seem to hsve lost their vision, or bsd become dis couraged. But the Lord had not forgotten them. He appeared and told them where to eatch fish, and then we have the lovely jeene around the fire as they breaklasted together. There it was that the Lord met Peter, and aa be had denied .Christ thrice he is asked to thrice declare bis devotion to Him. " , The man who thus declared bis readiness to serve Christ to the end bad many an opportunity to prove the sincerity of that profession. He met persecution and Imprisonment, but te every effort of man to close his mouth or to change bis witness be bad the simple reply absolute obedience to the Lord. Tradition tells us that this faithful ness finally led Peter to a martyr's death. So we see a life made over, made pewerfuL made glorious tor Ood through the matchless grace of our Lord Jesus Christ He can do U for you, too. Will you let Him? A. . OAT2Al70n , ' Wafiawa, .
