Mrs. Middleton went .through one year of college and taught school for one year. -v Mrs. Middleton believed with Edgar A. Guest that "It takes a heap o' livin' . to make a home." When she married Mr. Middleton they went to live at his old home place which was a small seventy two acre farm with a lovely old colonial home on it. However, the farm was heavily mortgaged and they had very little cash money. But the lack of material means did not affect the home life that she built up in her 'home. When the old colonial home burned Instead of building a new home with the $2,500.00 insurance check they moved into a tenant farm house on the place, and paid off the morfln gage on the farm. This was. done so that they might take, the money they had been paying on the mort gage and help their children through college. The little tenant house is now one of the most liv able and hospitable places in the COUnty. ' Mrs. Middleton has not only been 'a good wife and mother, but she has been one of Duplin County's mqst outstanding Home Demonstration Club women for 25 years. Cooper ating with, the very first agent who came to the County. It has been her privilege to serve where she was most needed. She has been the president of her local home demonstration club, the president of the county council of home dem onstration clubs, county chairman of nutrition and home beautiflca tion programs, chairman pf the State Home beautlf ication program, recording secretary of the State Federation of Home Demonstration clubs and has been vice-president of the State Master Farm Home Maker's Guild. Through cooper ation with the Home Agents, N. C. State College Agricultural Exten sion Service, and various southern agricultural magazines, her influ ence has been felt throughout the South. Her year-round gardens won prizes two different years in the Southern Ruralist contest for bet ter gardens. In 1929 she was honor ed by the Farmer's Wife and the North Carolina State College of Ag riculture as a Master Farm Home Home Maker. On March 6. 1935, she was invited by the head of the N. C. State College Agricultural Extension Service to broadcast during the Farmland Home Hour from Washington, D, C. As a result of this broadcast she has received many letters from people who were interested in her talk. -. s Mrs. Midleton was one of six teen women appointed on the Na? tional Advisory Council of leading farm home makers from all over the United States by the Perfect ion Stove Company. She was given a complimentary trip to Cleveland, Ohio, where she was shown through the factories and extended many social courtesies. In 1940 Mrs. Mid dleton went to New York to attend the Congress for Democracy. For the past twenty-seven years she has done everything that she could to promote better rural con ditions among the farm women of the county and State. She has at tended every Farm Woman's Short Course that has been held at the Agricultural College of North Caro lina. This has helped her; render better service to her home and to her community.' . ;!V. ;'?.;,';: .Mrs, Middleton has said that home demonstration dub work had helped her more than any other one thing, not only in broadening her outlook in life, but financially as well. Through home demonstration curb markets she sold cakes and vegetables. Mrs. L. P. Best, of Warsaw, gave Mrs. Middleton some shrub cuttings from which ' she started a small nursery, which has grown until now is is self-supporting and furnishes a small income the year-round. Mrs. Middleton has been rewarded for her : sacrifice and efforts to give the very best to her family. Two of her daugh ters are married and have nice homes. Her oldest son is married and doing well. Her youngest son served his country overseas. , . - In answering the question, what Is your definition of a home?, (in the Mister Farm Home- Makers Work Sheet) Mrs. Middleton wrote, "Home is a sacred name for a house, and one of -God's institu tions, a place where we obtain happiness, health, food, imagina tion and character. Last, but not least, a place where the sweetest flowers on earth grow, the children that God has entrusted to our care;" With all of her other duties Mrs. Middleton has yiven iter Sundays to her Church. She has taug'it a Sunday School Class for the past 22 years and has cooperated in any way that she couldto piomoie Christian work in her community.
