evil of current history, Governor
Cherry has-prodaimed April - as
Cancer Costrf-Month and called
on North Carolinians to raise $168
000 to aid the American Canqer
Society In Its battle to bring can
cer under controL . .
"Cancer has become a state and
national disaster," Cherry said,
"and its control is the great medi
cal and health problem of today."
The problem has become so ser
ious, he added, that the U. S. Con
gress and North Carolina General
Assembly have passed special acts
designating April as Cancfer Con-

Mrs. Mary Boney Carter, 62, wid
ow of David .Carter, died at her
home near Wallace Friday after
noon of last' week , after several
months of illness. Funeral services
were held Saturday-at 3:30 p. m.
at the home, conducted by the Rev.
J. N. Evans, pastor of the Wallace
Baptist Church. Burial was in the
Rockfish cemetery. Surviving are
two brothers, Johri . A. Boney of
Wallace, and H. A. Boney of Em
poria, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Ben Wal
lace of Wallace; and a stepson, Al
bert Teachey, of Columbia, S. C.
and Rivers Winstead of Kenans
ville, with whom he made his home;

The hope for conquest of cancer
lies in coordinated and adequate
financed research, Cherry said, as
planned by the American Cancer
Society.
North Carolina has been asked
to contribute $168,000 to finance
the work of the society during the
coming year, " and the campaign
to raise the fund is being handled
by the North Carolina Division of
the Society. Mrs. George E. Mar
shall of Mount Airy is chairman
and John D. Larkin of Trenton is
State campaign chairman.
