AS BELIEVERS in Ch. it wt. are ; ' responsible not only for the way we earn our living, but Icr the , . way we spend what we earn. , Ot course we must earn our living, :,? honestly, but if we spend foolishly ,,. that which we have earned, w' shall have dissipated much of the .1. effect of our example in earning. , Possessions are a trust from , God, and we shall have to render an account of our stewardship. Just because we have given a, pprtoln nercentase of our income to. .. Christian causes Is no reason to think we shall meet with divine '. approbation with regard to our Btpwarrishirj. If we eive a tithe, well and good, but what about the, ' other nine-tenths? Is God pleased . with our stewardship there? I. The Vanity of Wealth (Ecclea. - 5:10, 11). IN ANY study of wealth, it seem necessary to beein with an un derstanding of its limitations. We livn iii a world in which men fxe quently lay great importance on,' , possessions, and indeed, there ar , many thin; i which wealth can pur-.s-chase. On the other hand, there are' fhmf thnt mnnev cannot' buy. And further, v.e should recog-1 nize that our posse iiions are not eternal, thai the , nay suddenly; ' fade away. . The passa-p hi.e reminds lis of the fact that wealth for wealth's sake Is bound to be a disappoint- ment. The man who loves silver i f; , shall not be satisfied with silver, t any more than the man who loves pleasure shall be satisfied with '( pleasure. Augustine was right ; when be said that man could be -satisfied with no less than God - hlrrEcir. ' Notice : v accurately the picture.' T'i only advantage is, as the Preacher -expresses it, the -behold-.. , ing of goods with the eye not ft K vt.y great advantage after all. f ri II. The Proper - Accumulative ef -, t Wealth (Prov. 18:8). " ' ' IT IS Just as true as when Solo mon wrote it, that "Better is , little, with righteousness, than great revenues with Injustice." r This statement needs no argu ment, needs no proof. If we would -have the honor of men, self-respect, ' . and the blessing of God, there it no alternative. . v I?I. The Improper Accumulation of Wealth (James 5;l-6). THE apostle James speaks of a ' condition that will obtain in the last days (v. 3). There are many ' evidences that the condition he de- -( scribes has had altogether toO( many fulfillments in recent history. . James excoriates the rich who have defrauded their employees in . order that they might fare sump-;-tuously and live riotrsly. These un-, scrupulous rich have taken advan- . tage because they were not resisted (v. 6). Such wealth is corrupted. ,j Notice once a sain that the re- , suit of their sin will rise to break them. It is a serious thing te , trifle with sin, to eat the bread of ) iniquity. God has no patience with . Injustice in social relationships. ; Sooner or later Judgment ' will . come. TV. The Proper Use of Wealth (Prov. 11:24-27). LIBERALITY should character ize the child of God. It i true" that tlie Lible condemns the nttb. r. tude of imprudence, yet it also con demns the attitude of the miser. To"1 withhold more than Is meet, also , tends to want. How blessedly true it is that there is a recompense to giving. Here we read that the one who waters shall .'. himself be watered. Our Lord af firmed the same truth in Luke 6:38. To have it within our power te help, and fail to do so, is to bring ' upon ourselves censure and con- -demnatlon. Therefore, we should seek to perform the good (v. 27). This passage concludes with the ' statement that one who searche after evil shall find that evil will -come to him. The man who sets hlg heart to do wrong will not have to ,. wait long to find the occasion to do that which is in his heart Many are the injunctions In tne New Testament regarding the proper use of wealth. For example, the Christian hat a duty toward his . own family (I Tim. BiB). Be la en joined to be sympathetic and gen eroua bb hi giving to help others n Cor. 8:8-18). Certainly be U to dispense his goods with the glory ol God in view (ct CoL 3:17). Released by Western Newspaper t) . Attend Church On f " H ', 3 r:
