WEEKS Weed Control Where chemicals are to be appli ed for weed control on tobacco plant beds, they should be applied 60 to 90 days ahead of seeding. There are two materials that may be used, Cyanamide or Uramon. Ap ply 341b per sq. yd. and mix thoro ughly to a depth of three inches. Then put V4Ib per sq. yd on too and leave to dissolve. Treat a yard wider than you expect to plant. If dry weather follows application, wet down the bed thoroughly. Growers who plan to use chemi cals should get them as soon as possible. Corn Production It is encouraging that corn yields have increased from an average of 20 to 23 bushels, 4 or 5 years ago, to an expected 29 bushels this year. Several of the field that the growers entered in the Duplin County corn production contest have been checked for yields and to date Mr. J. M. Holland of Mt. Olive has registered the highest yield of 91 bushels per acre. We are still hoping to find a luu Dusnei nr acre field in Dunlin. There ere several fields yet to be checked. Permanent Pastures More interest has been ihown in seeding Ladino Clover and Orchard grass in permanent pastures this fall than in any previous fall. It it now getting late to seed fall pas tures but preparations can be start ed for spring seeding in February. Temporary Grazing In order to increase the amount of grazing from Rye Grass and small grains an application of 300 to 500 pounds of general fertilizer such as 5-10-5 should be applied at seeding time and in fall and spring and application of nitrogen. The U. S. Department of Agri culture has announced that the Commodity Credit Corporation will buy rice on a competitive bid basis to meet export requirements. Gene Holland ComparesHybrid Corn Production A good comparison of hybrid corn production ana open polli nated variety on the same farm was recently made by Gene Holl 7 and, of Warsaw, Rt. 2, and a tenant -on the same farm, according to X. H. Reynolds, assistant county agent. Gene planted an acre of N. C. 2 hyhrid, using 2001b of5-7-5 ierti- - lizer and 40016 of soda. His yeild was 77 bushels. The tenant plant- ed an open pollinated variety using " 2001b of 5-7-5 fertilizer and 3001b -of 10-0-10. His yield was 52 bushels. : Both fields were planted in 4 foot rows, 18 inches in the drill.
