The Origin Of "Bridal"
Take the society page of anv
newspaper, and you will find that
one of the words most frequently
used is "bridal.
Consult any dictionary and you
will learn, if. you do not already
know, that the-word originally was
bride-ale. It had its origin in an
cient England when ale was the
feature of almost, every type oi
festival. Many of 1 these festivals
were for fund-raising purposes,
such as tithe-ales, give-ales, and
church-ales to facilitate the col
lection of parish dues and funds
for needed repairs.
The merriest of all of them was,
of course, the bride-ale. The set
ting was as festive as possible.
Presents filled the tables and fam
ilies and friends of the bridal cou
ple mingled gaily in their holiday
