So much research has been done ujon this disease that it Is unlikely that a preventive or cure will be discovered suddenly. For this reas on, research is directed toward fundamental aspects of the disease that may enable control through long and well thought-out enter prise. ..;; ' The Committee on Medical Re search of the National Tuberculosis Association has long been concern ed with fundamental laboratory in vestigations throwing light upon the Intimate nature of the tubercle bacillus and the physiological pro cesses Dy which it uvea. At the same time, the Committee has tpon- sorea cluneal investigations which furnish better understanding of the progress and prognosis of different forms of tuberculosis and related conditions which offer difficulty in-oiagnosu. ' These investigations are often of highly technical nature and. be cause 01 their complexity, proceed slewly. The chief reason for their continuation, is the hope that , vul nerable points will be discovered In the life processes of the tubercle bacillus, which- will enable trained Investigators to suggest -means of interposing obstacles either to the essential life processes of the germ or to Its synthesis of new materials for its body structure., Such inves tigations are Intimately tied with research on the manner in which such drugs as streptomycin act It is well known that many cases of tuberculosis in Its minimal state often heal easily and spontaneously with little care. Others progress to : a fatal issue. The reason why many cases of minimal tuberculosis go on to the advanced and often hope less state is notes clear as. might be supposed. The current large study, based on thousands of cases, is ex pected to yield valuable .informa tion on this most important point . Other studies has to do with the course of TB in childhood. Child hood tuberculosis, fortunately, is rapidly coming under control. Yet the fact remains that many children sun acquire lesions, early In life. These may be a menace to future health through the establishment of latent foci which remain dormant for years, audi progress to disease in adult life. Exact investigation of the relation of progression of the disease in childhood to the age of uie cnua, lime of first infection, type ox care given, nutritional state of the child . and other factors, is yielding information which should be of great importance in determin ing what are the 'best .means for protection.
