:;,!isl Hospital Is Observing Its Silver Anniversary The North Carolina Baptist Hos pital, which is observing its Sil ver Anniversary this year, opened .its doors to the public on May 28. 1923. Since that time more than 100,000 persons have been hospital-l ized there and more than 12,000 babies have been bora there. Only two floors of the original building were put into use at first but the rapid influx of patients sooif made utilization of the entire building necessary. The Nurses' Home was built in 1927, and addi tions were made to it in 1937 and 1944. By 1940 the hospital building was bursting at the seams and a 200-bed enlargement was made to bring the capacity up to 300 pa tients. The outpatient building was constructed at a cost of $240,500 in 1945 and by 1947 was reporting an average of more than 2,000 patient visits per month. In .the meantime, the hospital was taking steps necessary to be come an institution of teaching as well as healing. The largest single step in its professional develop ment came in July, 1941 when af filiation of the Baptist Hospital with the Bowman Gray School of Medicine was affected. The medical school was raised from s two-year to a four-year school and moved to Winston-Salem into a building adjoining the hospital building. The institution is the only Baptiatrown ed hospital and medical school Combined in theVorld today. - Statistically speaking, the ori ginal building which cost $283, 235.96 has grpwa into an establish ment worth $1,437,941 and this, plus the medical school's estimated value of $372,500, brings the total value to approximately $1,810,441. The school of nursing has gradu ated 386 nurses in 22 classes. The staff of a half dozen or so which ran the hospital in 1923 has grown into a staff of almost 300 doctors, nurses, receptionists, accountants, secretaries, department heads, and technicians in the combined hospi tal and medical school. With activities still continuing to expand and with patients being turned away daily, plans are ma turing for the removal of the entire plant from its present location in Ardmore to the Graylyn Estate where the convalescent center has already been established. Tentative plans have been drawn for the new plant with the maternity unit de stined as the first to be constructed. o o O O o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR ALL RADIOS O V O o o o o o o A EXPERT RADIO REPAIR Hall's Radio Service QUICK SERVICE ALL WORK GUARANTEED Bring Your Radio In For A Hot Weather Static Check Up Carlos Davis To Graduate From Mars Hill College Carlos Leroy Davis, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. For many years the Democrats of North Carolina have observed the custom of alternating the election of its principal officers Gov ernor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House between EAST and WEST. For decades this gentlemen's agreement, similar to that generally observed in many of our State Senatorial Districts, has been substantially observed and adhered to and this process has brought stability and harmony to the Democratic party of North Carolina. By the terms of the agreement the County of ALAMANCE has always been considered WEST. Before the turn of the century Thom as M. Holt was elected Lieutenant Governor from ALAMANCE as a WESTERNER. More recently R. L. Harris of PERSON was elected Lieutenant Governor as a WESTERNER and A. H. Graham was elected Lieutenant Governor and later ran for Governor from ORANGE County, as a WESTERNER. Both ORANGE and PERSON Counties are farther EAST than ALAMANCE, and are considered WESTERN counties. In 1944 Kerr Scott of ALAMANCE, now a candidate for Gov ernor, seriously considered running for the U. S. Senate to succeed Bob Reynolds, which clearly showed that he recognized ALA MANCE County as in the WEST. Now is the time for the Governorship to come to the EAST. Uphold the agreement! Vote solidly to nominate a man from the EAST CHARLES M. JOHNSON of PENDER County. Failure to elect an EASTERNER will mean the rotation agreement is broken and in the future the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House will be elected at large. In the Democratic Primary, the INDUSTRIAL WEST can out-vote the AGRICULTURAL EAST, but in the General Election the West needs the Heavy Democratic vote of the East.
