Aflonfic Beach Bathing beauty contests are al ways the biggest attractions at oc eon side resorts but usually each rtsort has but only one and not mors than two each season. -. This year Atlantic Beach is hold ing a contest each week on Sun day afternoons between 5:30 and 6 o'clock. The first was held Sunday, June 13. t . The bathing beauty contests will be known as the "Atlantic Beach Showcase of Beauty". Contestants will be selected from Sunday after noon - patrons enjoying the sun, and and surf here. It does net matter ' where the beauty calls home. She will be spotted by a committee, Invited to take part In the "Showcase of Beauty" and the contestant will have an opportunity 1 to win, not only the title of "Miss Atlantic Beach," but also a beauti ful white bathing suit with "Miss Atlantic Beach" embroidered on It f .Ten such contests will be held. Then there will be a big finale In which the 10 "Miss Atlantic Beach" title holders will appear In the big showcase of beauty and from this group one will be selected the beauty queen of them all with the addition of "1948" added to her title of Miss Atlantic Beach. The finale winner will be awarded a gigantic silver trophy and mer chandise prizes with a total retail value up to $ 1,000. Four district finalists, survivors of a field of more than 2500 North Carolina rural school youths, will, compete in Raleigh Tuesday, June 22, in the State Finals of the 1048 Cooperative Essay Contest. Prizes for the State Finals in clude a year's college scholarship and $100 in cash to the winner and $50, $25 and $15 for second, third and fourth places. Thj subject for the contest is, "Farming - A Challenge To All". Virginia Hall, 17-year old student of King High School in Stokes County will represent the Central District in the State Finals. Laura Frances Pope, 16-year old student of Coats High School in Harnett County will represent the Southern District : Ellen Dupree, 18-year old stu dent of Sinithfield High School will represent the Eastern District. The fourth and final contestant in the finals is Francis Pressly of Scotts High School in Iredell Coun ty. Francis is the only boy in the finals and won the berth by a vic tory In the Western District The State Finals will be held at the Woman's Club In Raleigh fol lowing a luncheon. Camp Tuscarora, operated by the Tuscarora Council, Boy Scouts of America, for Scouts in Wayne, Du plin, Jphnston and Sampson coun ties was officially opened last week. The event was marked by an opening campfire ceremony con ducted by members of the Golds boro Lodge of the Order of the Arrow. Ashes from the last camp fire of the 1947 season that had been burled, were uncovered and sprinkled on the opening campfire, symbolic of bringing forward the past tradition- tnd adding them to the new. Brinson, 60, died Thursday afternoon June 10, in a Raleigh hospital following a linger ing illness. Funeral services were held at the home of her brother, Levy Sumner of near Beulaville Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, con ducted by the Rev. S. A. Smith, Free Will Baptist minister offSeu laville.
