That whereas, on May 27, 1948,
a petition was filed with the Duplin
County Board of Elections, under
Chapter 1084.. of the Publia Laws
of North Carolina, 1947 Session, by
J. A. Powers and 2057 other persons
duly qualified, demanding that a
special election be held, as provided
and prescribed by said Statute be
held, and the Board of Election
having determined that the said
petition meets tie requirements of
said sections of law as provided in
Chapter 1084 and that said petition
should be allowed and ordered as
required of said Board.
Now therefore, notice Is harebv
given that a special election is
hereby called and will be held nn
Saturday, the 28th, day of August,
1048 in Duplin County in which
shall be presented the following
questions:
1. The question of legal sale
of wine in Duplin County.
2. The question of legal sale
of beer in Duplin County.
3. The question of legal sale
of both beer and wine in
Duplin County.
Notice is further given that all
Registration Books in all of the
various precincts in Duplin Coun
ty shall and will be open for the
purpose of Registration of voters.

David Harvey Newkirk, 79 died
at his home Thursday afternoon af
ter a lingering illness. Funeral
services were conducted from the
home Saturday morning at 10:00
o'clock by the Rev. J. V. Case, pas
tor of the Rose Hill Methodist
Church. Burial followed in the1
Rose Hill Cemetery. In addition to
his wife, the former Lucie Ellen
Wells, he is survived by four sons,
Robert, Winton, Harvey' and Law
rence of Richmond, Va. and James
Bryant of Ennice; one daughter,
Mrs. Carrb Halls of the home; 3
brothers and 9 grandchildren. 1
