VBG Calypso Women To Beautify Cemetery The Women's club of Calypso has undertaken beautification of the Calypso cemetery as its major pro ject for 1949, and issued a call for help from the entire community in an effort to complete the pr ied, according to Mrs. W. H. Hur dle, secretary-treasurer of the club. It is expected, Mrs, Hurdle said, that between J350 and $500 will be spent before all the work proposed by the club is completed. This in volves clearing the cemetery of all weeds, brush and unwanted trees, planting of grass and landscaping the area. No attempt will be made to beautify individual graves, she said. To further the project, Monday, March 7, has been set aside as the second community work day on the project. The first day many persons donated a day's work, tools, etc., for the job. Among those who have contri buted much to the project are By ron Bryan, who furnished a bull dozer and a man to operate It, and Johnny Albritton, who has furnish ed two tractors, a truck and two men for two days to help with the project. All interested persons should give their contributions in money, or make arrangements to give labor for the work to Mrs. Hurdle. A total of $100 has been collect ed in public subscriptions, $47 of which has been spent and $100 has been donated by the town. ' ' from Our Readers AT THE CROSROADS.. , . To the Editor: In this present age, it isn't an uncommon thing . for people to express their fears of one thing or another, audibly or thru the press. I believe we have only one ism to fear, and that is Communism. Communism is a threat to civiliza tion, our free way of life, and life itself here in America. As for "The Church of Christ", it has always been a champion for the cause of righteousness ar.d freedon from the days of the first apostles. We are standing at the crossroads while Communism is fighting a cold war against democracy. If Com munism wins, all freedom of re ligion, and everything else that ex ists to uphold the dignity of mar. will be lost. MRS ROSCOE PIERCE Beulaville, Route 1. Southern Farm Market Summary Livestock prices continued up ward this week at southern markets but brought only slight increases in marketward movement of ani mals. Most classes of cattle showed ad vances of 50 cents to $2 per 100 pounds, and most hog prices were strong and 25 cents to 50 cents higher. The advance followed sub stantial gains of the week before. Cattle marketings are usually light in late winter at southern points, and the suply of hogs also begins to taper off. All southern broiler markets were steady to firm during the week, with demand good and move ment sufficient to keep stocks wel" cleared. Prices were a cent higher in central North Carolina. Middling 15-16 inch cotton clos 0 at 32.74 cents a pound, compared with 32.50 cents a week ago. , yf .aii -..w . t v. '--,-i ;yx-j.srvsi-.i ', ?": You can see the difference at a glance. Proposed auditorium gymnasium which would greatly benefit Duplin will cost $60,000.00. of which all but $3,000.00 is now in sight. In view of the fact that lar gest commitments are contingent upon our raising the necessary funds to make up the balance an i complete the project during 1949, it is in utmost urgency that I ask everyone who can help, to do so as soon as possible."
