t!o King Wanted m i; By: GEORGE PECK . i- For countless centuries billions t men have struggled for the right o govern themselves. When Thon 55 Jefferson, John Hancock and t kroup of serious-minded individu als wrote the American Declaration -at Independence, they electrified the masses of people the world ov er. ' ' Few outside of the thirteen col iirties thought the colonists would win the glorious rights as pronoun ced in the Declaration .of Indepen dence. But, with the surrender - Cormvallis at Yorktown, our fore fathers had won the right to set up a kind'of goverrtement of their own choosing with no King to head it Five years later the Constitution was written the first document in history that put every citizen i equal terms with all other: citizens, insofar as his political and legal rights were concerned No greater sacrifice ever was made than that of the pioneers of the thirteen col onies to secure this equality before 1Z MODEL THEATRE Beulaville, N. Man ". thousands died 'and many other thousands. sufered terrible tfrlvattonc under- arms to win freer dom; for this country. ; r ' 'r 7; Tor a, century and a half We seemed to have a sincere apprecia tion of this heroic struggleDuring tjiat. 150 years we built the greatest civilization this . world has ever known, 'and America became the envy' of every: other nation. Now, many Americans would relegate that ; Sacrifice to ' Hie - scrap-heap, they; have lost that burning desire to be a free people with equal uf frage. Have they .come to the con clusion that we are no longer fit to govern ourselves and that we should turn that ' Job over . to a King and a retinue of bureaucrats? Last January 20, we witnessed what was termed the inauguration of a president. To many of us the spectacle took on the terrifying aura of a coronation, and the broad, dictatorial powers since asked for by our Chief Executive indicate that he, himself, believes he exchanged his Missouri sombre ro for a crown upon that gala occa sion. Congress must refuse to grant the Administration the authority to impose peace-time controls, to fix prices, to put Uncle Sam into the steel business or any other busi ness, at its caprice or whim. Other wise, the sacrifice made by our fore fathers will have been in vain. Let your Congressman and V. S. Senators know that you are bitterly opposed to reverting back to the status of "subject" that you wish to remain a "free citizen" and re mind them that Kings have been very much out of style in America since 1776. ' By the Declaration of Independ ence and the victorious struggle of those heroes of the thriteen colon ies, the principle of "The Devine Right of the Individual" was estab lished here in America, and "Thr Devine Aight of Kings" was defi nitely disestablished. Notice was served to the world that in the Uni ted States no King Is wanted. Fred F. Jones Dies In Duplin Fred F.
