Duplin Representative's Bill
Brings Up Old Question
By: LYNN NISBET
la Kliu ton Free Press
Baleigh, Mar. 23 The bill intro
duced last week by Rep. Lewis
i Outlaw of Duplin Authorizing land
surveyors to prepare deeds for real
estate brings to the front and old
question about "unauthorized prac
tice of law."
CHANGES Under existing
statutes, which many people con
tend were written by and for law
yers, no person other than a licen
sedsed attorney can prepare a deed
or other instrument of conveyance
for real estate. The legal profession
has protested any infringement up
on this reserved right. The Outlaw
measure would allow a registered
land surveyor to prepare papers
for division or transfer -of real
property in cases where he did the
surveying.
OPPOSITION Spokesmen tor
the State bar say the lawyers will
oppose this loosening of present
restrictions on two grounds: First
they feel its enactment would re
sult in many cases of faulty titles
and cause a lot of confusion: and,
secondly, they will resist any ef
forts to open the doors for the rec
ognized practice of law by anyboJy
not formally licensed by the State
Bar examining board.
FEAR One lawyer, who said
he was speaking only for himself
and not for his profession, is in
clined to favor passage of the bill.
His idea is it will result in so much
Lacy Weeks Says...
"Spring is clean-up time time
to clean out farmstead hazards that
might cause injury and loss cm
man-hours on the-farm", County
Agent Lacy Weeks of State Col
lege Extension Service declared
this week.
"A place for everything and
everything in its place" is a good
slogan, the county agent said. He
added, the largest single cause of
injuries, other than the personal
factor of poor Judgment, is dis
order. Removing trash collections
reduces the chances for fire and
destroys "rat hotels."
"If every farm family would con
duct a spring clean-up campaign
both indoors and outdoors," he de
clared, "it would go a long way o
ward eliminating fire and accident
hazards, provide a more healthful
environment, and conserve food
which is badly needed in many
parts of the world."

rE TURNING-POINT In Jesus'
career was dramatic. But the
few friends who were present did
not than realize what it meant. On
a vacation Journey,
Jesus put to his
most in 1 1 mate
friends this ques
tion: "Who do men
say that I am?"
Peter's answer,
"Thou art the
Christ," may sound
obvious to us, but
was not obvious
then.
It was sensational
so much so that Jesus did not want
the publicity that would come to
him If that name "Christ" were free
ly circulated. For the word "Christ"
meant nothing less than "King." To
the Remans it would sound like trea
son; but to the Jews it would sound
like Judgment Day.
When Peter said, "Tea are
the Christ," he was Implying
also: "Ton are Immortal. Ton
are the earning conqueror at the
world. Ton are not In the same
elasa with any ether man. Tea
will do for mankind what no
other here has ever done."
God's View and the Devil's
01? ALL THAT glowing devotion
Jesus' next announcement fell
like icy rain. In the ears of those
friends of his it sounded like the
bell of death. Never before had
Jusus told them anything like this,
and they must have found it hard to
believe. For be had not a word
about a throne, nothing about suc
cess, nothing about mastering the
world. Quite the contrary. He must
"suffer many things ... be rejected
. . . be killed." If they heard the
words "rise again" too, the words
made no impression.
For Jesus had announced what to
them seemed impossible, absurd:
Ba, the Christ, would be killed I
Small wonder that Peter broke out
No, Not But Jesus would not com
promise. He even called Peter
"Satan" for thinking as he did.
'The Chrlstaia charch agrees
with Jesnr, aat with Peter. We
realise today, as Peter himself
did afterwards, what the Cross
of Christ means.
Buddha, founder of a very differ
ent religion, died in old age of over
eating. Can you imagine Jesus do
. Ing thatT . Suppose Jesus had taken
Peter's advice and made arrange
ments to retire comfortably where
he would never see a cross? Then
we never should have heard of him.
He would not have been worth bear
ing from. , .
''.
One Cross is Not Enough' ' '
YES, WE KNOW no that the
Cross of Christ is Important.
But we are a good deal like Peter,
after alL i For .we do not listen to
what we do not like to hear. And
.the next worda of Jesus, on that his
toric occasion, must have sounded
then as they do now, most chilling
oi an, -wnosoever would come
i after me, let him take his own cross
and follow me." In Jesus' time
no one was ever seen carrying a
cross who was not already under
sentence of death and on his way to
oe executed.
Translated Into modern terms,
what Jem said would sound as
i horrible as this: Any man who
' wishes to follow me mast take '
his seat on the electric chair
. . . most take bis place la the
lethal chamber , . . must put bis
neck to a noose , . . and follow
me.
One cross Is not enough. There
must be other crosses. My road is
a death-march. I want for my fol
lowers only those who are willing
to take the, same trail.
Trail of the Cross
CUCH WORDS sounded harsh then;
they do atilL. But In the light
of the centuries, we can see what
Jesus meant, better than that little
band of frightened men around Je
sus who did not want to hear the
words "suffer . . . die." Jesus was
not advocating pain tor pain's sake '
Why did Jesus set hlg own
race toward the. crossT The
Christian answer Is, He did It
. for others, Now what Is wrong
with the world today? It isn't
.- that we don't wish oar neigh
bors well; bat the treube is, we
don't want to be bothered, ear
. good-win Is toe tender to stand
- any strain, wo will do anything
far other people provided H
doesa't hart. .
But the world can be saved only
as men and women imitate and
multiply the spirit of the crucified
