Celebrates Her 82nd
Birthday Sunday
Mrs. Bett Winders was honored
Sunday on her 82nd birthday at a
luncheon eiven by Mr. and Mrs
Carl Winders. The home was en-
suite for the occasion and decorated
with a profusion of summer flow-
crs. Barbecue, fried chicken, chick
en, chicken salad, potato salad, pies,
cakes and other deliacies were on
the menu.
After the luncheon gifts were
presented to the honoree along
with a white birthday cake, orna
mented with pink and green. Light
ed candles spelled out the numeral
"82" and an inscription "Happy
Birthday, Ma" centered the cake.
Invited guests were Mr. and Mrs.
Abner Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Vance
Phillip", Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Phil
lips, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Best, Mr.

thdays Wednesday afternoon at
their home. Games were played
after which t-vo birthday cakes
were displayed, one red and white,
and one blue and white. Ice cream,
potato chins, suckers, cake and lem
onade were served to the fifty
guests. The young honorees recei
ved a various assortment of gifts.

two tables were at play. Dahlias and

club high and Mrs. Irene Martin re
ceived visitors high. Low score
went to Mrs. George Hopkins. Mrs.
E. E. Jones was presented a prize

have returned to Princeton, N. J.
after visiting her parents Mr. and
Mrs. B. H. Wiggs for some ime.
Mr. Gennchl is a senior at West
minister Choir College.
Billy Kornegay, who has been
employed at UNC since his gradu
ation from there In June is visiting
his parents before going to Gastonia
where he will teach in the City
School for the coming year.
Penny Branch
The Penny Branch HDC held its
annual picnic Wednesday at White
Lake. After first enjoying swim
ming a picnic lunch was sorvel to
the 40 peivons present.
It w.is agreed that this was the
most successful recreation of this
kind ever attempted by the club.

Miller HDC Meets
The Miller HDC held their meet
ing Wednesday night, Aug. 24 in
the home of Mrs. Flave Mercer.
Meeting was called to order by the
vice president with song after which

dames Ashe Miller, Ralph Miller,
and Otis Miller, Miss Hilda Clonlz
talked on "color in the home".

Meeting
Mrs. Caledonia Chestnutt, 83,
wife of the late Lewis Chestnutt,
died" at her home in Magnolia on
Monday August 29th at 1:00 p.m.
after several weeks illness follow
ing a stroke. Rev. Murrell Glover,
pastor of the Methodist Church of
which she was a member conducted
the funeral service at the home on
Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and
interment wos in the Magnolia
Cemetery beside her husband, two
sons, Arthur and Jim, and a grand
son, Edward. Pall bearers wore J.
P. Tucker, Sr., Hubert Tucker, Jack
Chestnut, Herman Pippin and Har
old Ezzell.Her grave was banked
with beautiful flowers.- A good
mother, good neighbor, and friend
has gone forever from our community.
She leaves one son, Cleve, and
three daughters, Mrs. Sam Hunter,
rural, Mrs. Mary Merritt and Miss
Charlotte Chestnutt in the home
with Cleve.
School opened the 18 with the
same faculty as last year except
one teacher Mr. John Fisher Ham
ilton who resigned and the school
had to lose one teacher. Miss Hawes
now teaches First Grade.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Mathews
and children spent the week end
with Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Mathews.
Andrew and family live in Clem
son, S. C. where he is professor of
Botany in Clemson College.
