Red Cross Sets $4,588 Quota For
Duplin County For Coming Year
A quota of $4,588.20 has been set
by the Duplin County Chapter of
the American Red Cross to meet
community needs during the com
ing year, Melvin G. Cording, chair
man of the 1950 Red Cross Fund
campaign, announced today. ' The
chapter will conduct its campaign
for the fund March 1 to 15th.
'March is the traditional month
set aside by Red Cross chapters
throughout the country to present
to the public the needs of the orga
nization for the coming year and
solicit financial support," Cording
added. "The Duplin County Chap
ter, joining with more than 3,500
chapters in this country, will offer
everyone in Duplin an opportunity
to contribute to the Red Cross and
to become a member of the organi
zation." 'Since the Red Cross is an orga
nization of all people, we feel sure
that the citizens of our own com
munities will meet their responsi
bilities by providing means for car
rying out our services."
"Disaster relief, continues to be
one of the major items in the Red
Cross budget. During the past year,
the Red Cross helped 228,500 per
sons ;n disaster operations in
mis country, and spent a total of
56,574,741.45 for assistance to vie
tims of disasters," Cording said.
During the past year Red Cross
workers handled 775,152 cases con

cerning servicemen, setting a new

Chapter handled 603 cases for ser
vicemen, veterans and their de
pendents.
The National Blood Program,
with 30 regional centers established
in the country in the two short
years, directly affects every com'
munity. Whole blood, plasma, and
blood derivatives, such as Immune
serum globulin to combat measles,
are stored for immediate use in dis
aster emergencies or epidemics.
These programs, along with the
many and varied other services per
formed through the Red Cross,
play important parts in our every
day life, Mr. Cording concluded.
For that reason, the Red Cross is
proud to stand on its past record
and ask the support of the general
public for continuing its many es
sential programs in the future.
Grey Ladies Bring
Joy To Patients
During Holidays
The saying 'Tis better to give
than receive" certainly held true
this past Christmas. Due to the
generosity of others, the men who,
because of illness, weren't able to
be with their families during the
holidays, enjoyed a Christmas of
their own In the Naval Dispensary.
On Wednesday, Dec. 21, those
who were able to be out of bed,
gave the Red Cross Grey Ladies a
helping hand decorating Christmas
tree.
Of course, Christmas wouldn't be
what it is without at least one par
ty, so on Dec. 23, the patients were
guests of the Grey Ladies at a
party held in the ward.
After the bed patients were ser
ved, the Grey Ladles held open
house in the Upper Foyer. Guests
were Ambulatory patients, and Dis
pensary Personnel. The serving
table was decorated with .a festive
gumarop tree, flanked by snowy
blocks, sprigs of pine and tiny se
vered cones. The table clotb was
made of red and green paper. A
huge beautifully ornamented tree
in the background added much to
the Yuletide atmosphere.
On Christmas Eve stockings fill
ed with cigarettes, cards, candy, etc.
were delivered to the patients. On
Christmas Day Grey Ladies decora
ted the patients trays with candy
and favors.
The Grey Ladies at Cherry Point
wish to thank the following orga
nizations for their generous contri
butions, and to assure them that
due to their help, Christmas for the
men in the Dispensary was an ex
ceptionally merry one.
Thanks again to Craven County
