Tuscercra Council
Holds Annual Meet
In Goldsboro
The Annual Council Meeting,
Tuscarora Council. Boy Scouts of
America, was held at the Golds
boro Hotel on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m
A large crowd from the four coun
ties comprising the Council was
present. The meeting was opened
by a group of Scouts and Cubs
carrying a huge, fouMiered, Birth
day Cake to the speaker's table.
Each tier on the cake represented
a decade of Scouting In the U. S.
and the 40th Anniversary theme
"Strengthen Liberty" was emphos
ized throughout by the narrator as
the ceremony progressed. Immedia
tely following the opening cere
mony, Rev. James McChesney,
Pastor of the First Presbyterian
Church in Goldsboro, offered the
invocation.
Pres. William P. Kemp made
a brief report on the Scouting acti
vities in the Council for the year
1949. Copies of the report were
available at each plate as souvenirs
of the occasion.
Three Silver Beaver Awards were
presented by Regional Committee
man, Dr. D .J. Rose. These awards
are the highest award that can be
earned by a volunteer in Scouting
o'i the Council Level. The awards
are made for outstanding service
to Boyhood over a period of years.
The awards this year were present
ed to Mr. H. Roy Cates of Faisoc,
Mr. S. Chas. Baddour of Clinton,
and Mr. Bruce G. Puke- of Golds
boro. The speaker of the evening was
Mr. Charles Phillips of the greater
University of North Carolina. He
stressed the need for the invest
ment of time and effort in our
youth.
Honored guests at the meeting
were Mr. W. D. Campbell, Regional
Committeeman of Southern Pines
Mr. Harold Makepiece, President
of Occonneechee Council, Sanford
and Mr. Herbert Stuckey, Deputy
Regional Executive of Atlanta.
