1 teatpoon vanilla .

Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt, and sift together ,
three times. Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, and cream together
until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.'
Add flour, alternately with milk, a small amount at a time, ibeating
after each addition until smooth. Add vanilla. Turn into greased muffin
pans, Ailing them V4 full. Bake in moderate oven (375 F.) 20 minutes,
i- until done. Frost with fluffy frosting and sprinkle thickly with moist,
t veetened coconut. Arrange cakes on large platter and insert candle
holder with tiny colored candle in each cake. Light candle just before
siving. Makes 2 down small or 15 large cup cakes. , "

Former Clubwoman
Commits Suicide
Mrs. Estelle Smith, age 63, for
mer North Carolina Home Demon
stration worker, and known by
club women in Duplin and all over
North Carolina, committed suicide
at her home in Raleigh Feb. 15
by shooting herself in the chest and
head with a pistol. Friends said
she had been despondent for some
time. ,
Mrs. Smith entered Home Dem-',
onstration work in Wayne County
in 1916. Since then she has devo
ted 31 years of untiring service to
the work in North Carolina. She
became district agent for 34 coun
ties in 1918. For five years she was
assistant State Home Demonstra
tion Agent before her retirement.
Through her efforts curb markets
were established in four large
towns in Eastern Carolina. She
wrote the constitution adopted by
the North Carolina Federation of
Home Demonstration Clubs, chang
ing the name from the Home Bu
reau. She was the first chairman of
the American Home Department
of the North Carolina Woman's
Clubs and was director of the Farm
Women's Short Course at Stale
College from 1927 to 1930.
