Just Published Lteoe "Seven Steps to Efficient Cot ton Production, a new bulletin which emphasizes ways to keep down costs and increase financial returns from cotton acreage, was published this week by the State College Extension Service, and copies are available on request The bulletin was prepared by J. A. Shanklln, extension cotton spec ialist, in cooperation with w. L. Nelson, professor of agronomy, Ag ricultural Experiment Station, George D. Jones, extension ento mologists, and others. It is print ed in two colors and amply Illu strated with both black and white and color photographs. The seven teps presented by the authors are: (1) Plant recommend ed seed. (2) lime and fertilize as needed. (3) Distribute the fertili ser, properly. (4) Mechanize plant ing and cultivation. (5) Apply side- dressing according to need. (6) Follow complete insect control program. (7) Sell cotton on grade and staple value. One of the illustrations shows a perplexed farmer trying to de cide which of three roads to take in his cotton-growing program. One is labeled "poor practices" and leads to a yield of half a bale per acre and a return of ony $25. The second, labeled "usual N. C. practices," leads to a yield of a bale per acre with a return of about $30. The i I, Luii "im proved N.
