LOOKIN' UP CONTINUED FROM FBONT tion and resistant varieties to de termine the most practical and economical. 5. Handling and packaging - to determine best methods of gra ding, sorting, packing and the most suitable packages. For example, Irish potatoes went from 'barrels to 100 lb.-bags and now are being packed in 50 lb. and even 10 lb. bags. Strawberries went from 36 qt crates to 24 qt. crates and in many areas now the 24 qt. crate is being used. 6. Seed sources - with relation to general prefonnance and diseas es. An example of this fact that it has been found that cabbage seed from the Puget Sound area of Wash ington is less likely to have Black Rot than those from 'some other areas. 7. Irrigation -- cheapest meth ods and the amount of supplement al water necessary. Does it pay? How much? 8. Plant beds - experiments on finding the most efficient methods of obtaining early plants of the transplanted crops. 9. Plant breeding - - breeding of varieties that are resistant or tol erant to our most prevalent disease and insect pests as well as for gen eral adaptability for yields, ear liness and quality. Home gardens, which are regard ed as important to city as well as farm families, will be considered along with the entire program. It shall be remembered that varieties best suited for commercial growers may not be ideal for home gardens. An example would be Wando gar den pea. Wando is a cold resistant, drought tolerant pea that has a. rather long harvesting season, ma king it ideal for the garden but not for the commercial grower who wants- a few large early pickings. Although primarily a vegetable station, a limited amount of work on strawberries, dewberries, rasp berries and blueberries will be car ried on at this station. 3 v.- " ' I I m omit to IMTXr Of m IKT0 WASAIMfTOA, 0.
