With Warren Douglas, And Audrey Longr ' ' AIi 8 O (bfcaif Of The Trail During this time of bard saving, the young man's father became 111, and was in sore need of medical attention, and when his mother timidly asked if he would make them a loan, he put her off firmly. His father's health would have to wait, for their beloved budget did not allow for loans, regardless of whom it was for,, or why. A short time later, his mother called to tell him that his father had passed on. If their conscience bothered them at this time, all they had to do to revive their good spirits was to look at their nice balance in their bank hook. Why, another few months of close budgeting and they could start building. Soon after his father's death ,he sent his widowed mother to live with one of her daughters. He thought one of asking her to stay with him but he would be forced to buy another bed, and too, the food bill would be higher. His bud get simply must not be changed. At about this time he noticed a decided change in the attitude of the boss and co-workers. They no longer joked with him as before, and conspicuously shunned him on several occasions. They no longer seemed to regard him as a friend. Their changed attitude, as near as he could figure it, had begun on , the occasion that the boss had passed the hat around after asking each to donate a sizeable sum that was to be given to one of the loyal workers who had recently been stricken with an Incurable malady. As the hat was passed, even the janitor, whose pay was small, put in $5.00 and lamented that he wish ed he could spare more. As the hat came his way, he, with his mind on the budget, put in a measly quarter, and he was sure that all looked at him at if they were see ing him for the first time. After this incident, things, changed very rapidly. In no time he was noti fied that his services were no long er needed. So he, with a heavy heart, de parted for home. Never had. It seemed so drab and cheerless, and Instead of finding a cheerful wife to greet him, he found her crying her heart out, To his utter amaze ment, she proceeded to . tell him that she could stand her unhappi ness no longer and that it was his fault that she had lost all of her friends. She raved on that all of her girl friends bad forsaken her because of their stinginess In ad' hering to that ."awful budget". As she continued to cry and rave on, he quietly went and got the budget that. once seemed so very, very im portant to them both, and tearing it to pieces, he laughed his old happy laugh again, something he had not done in months. It was so contagious that she soon joined in. Taking her gently in his arms, he said, V'Honey, this thing has been our downfall for It has made us selfish, hard nd unfeeling. A budget la alright if it is made right, but we 'made ours all wrong, for you see dear, we left God com pletely out Our next one will be very, very different' - .MOUNT OLIVE EASTERN CAROLINA'S FINEST THEATRE 1 -rlr& ii V 1 .
