DEVOTIONAL READING l FiSlm Ml ML When Worship Is Widked Lessen for April SO, MM "THE DUPLIN STORY" AGAIN (Wilmington Star, April 19) Announcement that the "The Duplin Story", which had such well deserved success at Kenans ville last year, is to be repeated in September is in deed good news. Sam Byrd of "Tobacco Road" fame will again direct the production and play the prin cipal role, and Corwin Rife of Charleston's Dock Street Theatre will be back as technical adviser, art ist and mechanical director. "The Duplin Story" attracted wile attention in its initial presentation. Observers of wide experi ence in dramatics agreed that nothing with a simi lar motif had appeared anywhere in America with greater merit. As this view necessarily- included The Lost Colony" and "Common Glory", the Ke nansville production obviously ranks with the best. It is seldom that a historical iece designed for open-air presentation is considered of such lasting worth as to be repeated year after year. The promo ters of The Duplin Story" are wisely planning to enlarge the amphitheater near the Kenansville high school to accomodate larger audiences than attend ed last year s event. Church-going is not necessarily a good act Worship may be a quite wicked deed. Most people are slow getting that into their heads. They think that one act of worship on Sunday will somehow make up for a lot of bad behavior Monday through Saturday inclusive. But it Is not so, The first person in history to see and to say that worship need not be good and can even be very bad, was none other than the prophet Amos. The Israelites to whom he spoke were what we would call a church jolnf people; they were certainly temple - going. They followed the same ritual that was used in Jerusalem, they offered tithes and sacri fices, they kept the Sabbath, they, attended the feasts and they observed the fasts and they Bang the sacred hymns. Yet Amos denounces the. whole business, and condemns the wor shippers as guilty sinners. What was wrong? It Looked AH Right READERS of the Old Testament will remember that at Bethel. where the Israelites had one of then- principal temples, golden calves had been set up to represent Jehov ah their God. Now even though the people worshipped the true God. surely it was wrong to worship him In the form of an animal. The form of their worship was all wrong, much further wrong than any form of Christian worship is today; yet Amos does not condemn them for worshipping in this mis taken way. Never once anywhere does he say a word about the gold en calves. And if he does not say anything about a big thing like gold en calves, still less does he have anything severe to say about less Important departures from "good form" in worship. He dees not condemn the peo ple for having the wrong hymn book, or for not having a good oaou. He hasn't a word of blame for non-attendance at worship; Indeed he eomes down -hardest en these who do attend. Apparently church attendance in Bethel was excellent that was net their trouble. Again, he has no fault to find with the Israelites because their "ser vices were uninteresting." Maybe they were; but on the other hand they were probably full of color and of pageantry, something to see as well as to hear. Yet Amos wss not Impressed. Further, he makes no complaint about poor sermons. i ' .,;-.. 5 3 Wstllnjten i(((B.
