Home Demonstration Women
Supplement Their Income by Put
ting Into Practice Good Methods
of Sewing.
Mrs. Henry Register has done
what many Home Demonstration
Club women over the States have
done. Many club women sell on
curb markets, other make crafts
to sell, but two years ago, Mrs.
Register saw the need for some
one to help people out with their
sewing and set up a little shop in
a corner of an old warehouse in
Tin City. Mrs. Register and Mrs.
White stay busy all the time making
costumes, new clothes and doing
alterations, but she shuts up shop
on the afternoons that her Home
Demonstration Club meets and is
always, present and willing to do
her parf in any county project
EAST MAGNOLIA CLUB
By Mrs. Southerland
The East Magnolia Home Demon
stration Club was organized by Miss
Ruth Eborn in the fall of 1926. This
club is one of the oldest clubs in
the county.
When our club was organized
the members believed that through
working together in a group, they
could enlarge their opportunities
and enrich the life of the com
munity. In meeting each month, the club
kept active during the depression,
and the last years of the war. To
this we will have to give credit to
our Home Agent's persistence in
meeting with us each month, and
bringing a sunny smile and cheer
ful disposition.
The Home Demonstration pro
grams have assisted us in Foods
and Nutrition, House Furnishings,
Home Management, Clothing, Fam
ily Life, and Home Beautification.
The club has sent some its mem
bers to the Short Course in Ral
eigh and some have won first prizes
In canning, poultry and yard im
provements. In the study of Foods and Nutri
tion, we have learned how to pre
pare and serve economical and
healthful meals for our families.
To select and prepare foods to save
food value and meet nutritional
needs of the body.
House Furnishing pragrams have
helped to make our homes more
liveable by improving our furn
ishings and equSpjment. Careful
selection of furnishings and the use
of creative arts in the home.
Home Management has helped
us to conserve woman power by the
wise use of all the resources to the
farm family and to increase the
family income.
In clothing we have learned to
improve the appearance of the fam
ily, by developing an imagination
that will enable one to use to the
best advantage all available cloth
ing material.
The study of Family Life has
helped us to understand the basic
needs of human nature. To work
with our teen-age boys and girls to
get off to a good start.
We have had programs in the
study of Home Beautification of
which we have learned how to use
natural beauty in making home
grounds and public property more
pleasing and inviting.

Chicken Contest
Plans Announced
Some 3,000 chicks hatched dur
ing the week March 6-11 will be en
tered in this year's "Chicken of To
morrow" contest in North Carolina,
according to C. J. Maupin, State
chairman and extension poultry
specialist at State College.
State contests are being held all
over the nation this year, and these
are to be followed by five regional
contests. The best entries from
North and South Carolina and oth
er Southern States in an area ex
tending from Delaware to Florida
will compete in a regional contest
at Spartanburg, S. C, on June 7.
A national contest will be held
in 1951, at which time A & P Food
Stores will award $5,000 for the
best entry. This organization is
also providing cash awards for the
regional contests and furnishing a
trophy for each State winner.
Birds from each entry in the N.
C. contest will be sent to Charlotte
at the end of a 12-week growing pe
riod. These birds will be dressed
and judged on May 30, and the win
ning entries will be hard-frozen and
held until time to ship to the re
gional event.
Maupin said a special poultry
program is being arranged in con
nection with the show in Charlotte.
George Hobson, Mecklenburg Coun
ty farm agent, is acting as chair
man of the program committee and
Miss Helen John Wright, home
demonstration agent, is publicity
