PORK, EGGS, CARROTS
ON PLENTIFUL LIST
The U. S. Department of Agri
culture issued its monthly 'list of
Southern plentiful foods this week
and Miss Hilda Clontz, home dem
onstration agent, said May food
markets will feature excellent sup
plies of pork and pork products,
eggs, and carrots.
Nationally, there are more chick
ens on farms this May than last
year and egg production for the
month may show a substatial in
crease, Miss Clontz said. In addi
tion, the fall crop of pigs is now
going to market. Plentiful supplies
of carrots will come mostly from
California and Arizona during the
next 30 days.
Other vegetables listed as May
plentifuls are cabbage, onions, Irish
potatoes, lettuce, canned corn and
canned lima beans.
Broilers, fryers, hens manufac
tured dairy products, fish, dry
beans and peas, and peanut butter
will be plentiful in May. All are
recommended by USDA nutrition
ists as excellent sources of proteins,
the home agent said.
Fresh fruits are missing from the
list for this month, Miss Clontz
said, but she emphasized that rai
sins, prunes, and canned peaches
are abundant.
Honey and cooking fats also will
be offered shoppers in generous
quantities throughout the month.
OUR OWN DUPLIN
There is no place so lovely as
Carolina in the spring,
When apple trees are blooming.
And how the birdies sing.
You may speak of scenes in Florida,
And Hollywoods lovely miss;
But no matter where you travel,
There's no place so nice as this.
Arid especially our own county
Yes old Duplin is so dear.
No matter where we travel to,
Our hearts and thoughts are here.
It's just the nicest place on earth
To all of us you see,
There's just no place in all the
world
Where we had rather be.

BE FERTILIZED NOW
Now is the time to fertilize pecan
trees. On light soils, half of the
fertilizer should be applied -now
and' half in June, so say specialists
at State College.
Under average conditions, the
growers use a 6-8-6 fertilizer at
the rate of two to three inches for
each vear of age or each inch of
trunk diameter of the tree. The
latter method is generally better
since it takes into consideration
the size of the tree. Trees of the
same age in an orchard do not al
luivi make eaual erowth. Pecan
roots extend out about twice as
far from the trunk as do the bran
ds Most of the feed roots are
located 6 to 8 feet beyond the ends
of the branches. For trees m or
more years old the fertilizer should
be spread evenly over the entire

She was eighteen. He was twen

people who realize for the first
time that "this is forever"; they
were thrilled. And because they
were young, they were impetuous.
Afraid that their parents would
object to their marriage, they
planned to elope. .
A small town in South C., was
chosen for the great event As they
sped along the way towards their
destination, she playfully chlded
him, "I hope you haven't forgot
ten the ring," she whispered. He
didn't admit it at the time: he was
too proud to admit that the oldest
joke of all time, "the one about
forgetting the ring", was on nun.
He ' had forgotten. "Dont worry
about the ring, Sweetheart", he
answered. "When we get there,
we'll stop at a jewelry store and
I'll buy the biggest rock in the
place."
This was pretty big talk for a
guy with twenty bucks in his pock
et. When they pulled into town,
he headed straight for a store. He
asked the jeweler .to show her a
tray of his prettiest rings: While
she looked at them and the atten
tion of the jeweler was diverted,
he pocketed a wedding ring and
the matching engagement ring.
The boy then effected a quick
get-a-way by telling the, jeweler
that he was not satisfied with any
of the rings that he had shown
them.
As soon as they left, the jew
eler discovered the theft, and tele
phoned the police who soon picked
them up and booked them on a
charge of grand larceny. Their
