A 50-year-old machine for mak
ing cigarettes, which still functions
perfectly, was brought from San
Francisco by Warner Bros, for seq
uences in "Bright Leaf, the Gary
Cooper-starrer due Monday and
Tuesday at the Capital Theatre In
KenansviUe.
Property of a tobacco company,
the mechanical antique was used
to make cigarettes during the war.
It can produce 10,000 cigarettes
per hour. Modern machines pro
duce up to 60,000 per hour.
"Bright Lear is set against a
lavish background of tobacco
country, with the invention of a
cigarette-making machine serving
a major point In the story.
Besides Cooper, the film co-stars
Lauren Bacall, Patricia Neal and
Jack Carson.
It's Folk Festival
Time In Carolina

event is the Carolina Folk Festival
in Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill,
June 15-16-17. Under the direction

Asheville, where he will direct the
23rd Moutain Music Festival in
August 3-4-5. He's just back from
Virginia where he directed the first
festival at Charlottesville in May.
Featured on the Chapel Hill pro
gram will be a group of 16 square
dancers from Austin, Texas, headed
by Mrs. LiUie Lee Baker and Henry
Hudson, the Texas team which rep
resented the U. S. at the Interna
tional Folk Music Festival in Ve
nice, Italy, last year.
There will also be a group from
Lynchburg, Va., and a dozen North
Carolina counties including Lenoir,
and Duplin, Caswell, Mecxlenburg,
Gaston, Randolph, Surry, Forsyth,
Buncombe, Alleghany and Orange.
The program is not confined to
group events. There are individual
singers, clog dancing and string
bands. The program changes
nightly, and nobody makes a profit
The admission fee of 75c plus tax
is to cover expenses.

very serious condition is reached.
Treatment is then necessary to re
lieve acute intoxication and accom
panying nutritional deficiencies.
"Public understanding Is nec
essary to alleviate the problem,"
cautioned Cunningham. "The road
to prevention and rehabilitation
may be found through education."
First Cabio Landed
At Morehead
Morehead City. First cabio of
the 1950 season, a 25-pounder was
landed in the water of Bogue Sound
near the former U. S. Naval Sec
tion Base on Sunday. It was caught
by Glenn C. Walter of 1 Craven
Drive, Havelbck, N. C. He was
fishing for trout and other bottom
fish at the time the cabio struck.

waters. Cabio are sometimes called
"crab eaters" and "colefish" by
coastal natives. They range over
