DAVIS A lot of changes have taken place In our community In the last 15 years. A person having left here 13 years ago and not having visited here within that time Vould be surprised. A copy of the Duplin Times of 1935 was loaned to me this week and it certainly was interesting since I have been here only about 7 years. This was a special section c MODEL THEATRE BEULAVILLE, N. C. FIRST ! CZZS!. One Way Out...FEET FIRST.! . - dated Thursday, June 13th, 1935, marking the opening of the Faison Auction Market. Most of the news items Were written by B. F. Mc Colman, Jr. Most of the residents of. Faison are acquainted with him and remember the time this spec ial edition was published. The late W. B. Martin was mayor of Faison at that time and a state ment from him occupies a promin ent place on the front page. Some might be Interested in it: "On behalf of the citizens of Faison and the Faison Auction Market I take this opportunity to extend an invitation and a word of welcome to the framers of Du plin, Sampson and the surrounding .counties to sell their produce on the Faison Auction Market. I will personally see that every courtesy and every aid and advice is extend ed to every farmer coming to our city We want you to feel that Fai son is your town and we have open ed the gates wide. "The merchants of Faison have up to date and modern stores and carry the best in their line of mer chandise. They welcome you and invite you to visit their stores be fore leaving town. "Faison is proud of her market. It boasts the largest cucumber mar ket In the world and the largest pickle plant in the Southeast. "Also I want to extend a welcome to buyers to come to the Faison market and bid on the produce of fered for sale. At present practi cally all the largest commission merchants in the metropolitan ar eas have representatives on the local mart and a standing invita tion is hereby issued to all buyers to take advantage of the produce offered on the Faison market." Signed: W. B. Martin, Mayor. That was an excellent statement by Mayor Martin and its contents should be in the minds of every one of us when we meet up with our farmer friends when they come here to sell their produce and maybe trade a little with us. The people of Faison were proud of their town auction market in II f A fl k I! Mfp, . C. JULY 10th, 1950 m mw m m m ami m m I' 3 11 licHIIICOLOR; those days. The tail end of the de pression had not completely passed out of the way in 1935. The Works Progress Administration was in full bloom and almost anywhere we could see little bands of men at work on some project. The water works project in Fai son had just been completed and a picture of the new water tank appears on the front page along with a picture of a double line of wagons and trucks waiting in line for the market. From the picture of main street with its line of waiting farmers it appears that parking was not allowed on main street when the market was in progress. All the traffic had tS move slowly down main street on to the auction shed. This certainly gave the farmers plenty of time to observe the stores as they passed by and proved an asset to the merchants. We often hear a lot of lamenting over the fact that the market has been moved out of town but that Is past and over and there is very little that we can do about it now. During the war years and im mediately after we have grown ac customed to making a little money without too much effort. I cannot help feeling that as a result of the war years we have become a little lazy. Most of us can remem ber the depression years of the 30's, and will go to a lot of trouble to ward off such a calamity again. Center Theatre . With'BUZZY HENRY, But, if fiucn should strike the na tion again, as it did In the 30's, Faison would be in a rather bad situation with 'the market moved out of town as it is." We realized that It was necessary due to the lack of space In town but we are going to have to do something to offset the sitnation we are now in. A few years ago we organized a chamber of commerce here but we have not been giving It the backing that we should. Jim Hill wbrked almost .night and day for the chamber of commerce 'until he became sick and could not continue with no pay "whatsoever. He was behind the movement that brought the experiment station to our com munity but the "amount of help he has received by others all put together would not amount to a good day's work by one man. Jim Hill is due a lot of credit and if given the help he is entitled to would do a lot for the town. We have been making some pro gress in the past few years. Our water supply has been improved and our sewage' system worked over but that is not. enough. We need industry and need it bad to offset our market losses.- Several firms have expressed an interest in Faison but enough of them have not been contacted. We are not capitalizing on the improvements we have made to the town. We are helping ourselves who live here but we are not doing a thing to bring others here to make use of our improvements. We have a good town and it is well located but we have got to do something to bring more people here. We have depended to6 long on the auction market to make a living for us. FAISON WINS TWO FROM CLAY HOLE The Faison baseball team won two games from Clay Hole over the past week end. The score for Saturday was 3 to 2 and Sunday's game was 8 to 7. Ingram pitched the Saturday's win at Faison and allowed only 6 hitsand struck out 11. Groome pitched Sutaday at Clay Hole and allowed 8 hits and struck out 7.
