Many-Gifted Man Lesson for July XI, 19W IF A MAN can do one thing well be. can usually find his place In the world. Life being as short as it is, and the possibility of misfits being what it is. It may also be fair to say that many a man who does one thing well could have done something else bet ter, if he had nad the chance. In Grey's "Elegy," you remember the line, "Some mute Inglorious Milton : ,. Or Fsreman here ma rest That is, In a country church-yard may rest the bones of some blred man who. If be had had another kind of start, might have been a world-famous scholar and poet like John Milton. - Triple-Threat Men WHAT In football is called a "triple-threat man" is to be found off the gridiron, sometimes. In real life. Once in a great while there arises a man who " not- only "could have done" more than one thing well, but who because of spe cial circumstances and opportunities actually doe. many things well. . Such persona are rare, and far above the average. Ordi nary men take .acta a long time becemlng expert In one line that they. .Imply don't have time in their Uvea to be expert at other thing, toe. Bnt there are geniuses with many .Ides, or perbap. men gifted with many talent, plaa an extraordi nary capacity for hard work In our times there is Albert Schweitzer, outstanding not only as a scholar but as a musician, doctor and missionary. The President of Harvard at the present time is a noted chemist as well as a disting uished executive. Robert E. Lee was a brilliant soldier who also, as an educator, left his mark on his native state to this day. Lelbnlti was a diplomat and philosopher; S.B.F. "Morse not only invented the telegraph but was a painter of un usual ability; the man who thought up the idea of savings banks was a minister of the Gospel; King David was a poet, musician, general and monarch. Samuel the Versatile SAMUEL, Judge of Israel, was another such man. "Jack ot all trades but master of none" does not describe him, for he was master of whatever he did. He has gone down in history as a prophet what in our times is called a preacher; but this was by no means all. He served his generation in other ways aa weH He was the chief axecntfve of the people, king withont too title. Though possessed af dic tatorial pewers, when daring a wave of nnpopalarity be re signed, and dared his critic to prsdnoe one aingla oasa af dis honesty or graft, none was brought against aim. Ha was a circuit Judfe. going from one city to another dispensing justice. He acted as a priest, indeed ai the high priest of hi people. We know of one occasion whan ha lad his people in battle, and ha was aa successful aa if war had always been his business. He was a king maker, for God entrusted to him twice the delicate mission of select ins; Israel's king, c, Times and the Man r'O thoughts strike one who reads the story of Samuel. One is the way his great and many-aided pow ers were used for public service. Put into modern terms, he could have made a fortune if he had '"stuck to private practice" and used his talents for himself. But at no time and In no way did Samuel work for Samuel. Ha worked for God and his country, and he died a poor but honored man. -v One of the greatest needs ef the Batten tedsy is men ef Sanv aTa calibre, triple-threat men. We have plenty of small-calibre bureaucrats, and we have plenty of large-calibre men who are quite selfish. : How few unselfish large calibre men there are! The other thought is that the times and the man go together. A man's greatness semes in large part from bis oppor tunities.. ...:r,. ... y .... John Milton helped make England i but England also helped make him. Samuel helped fflkke Israel, but at some other stage In history, lie might have lived and died country priest' Let no man' think himself self made; not even a great man. with out the God who endows him with his gifts, without the times that call forth the gifts, even the most fitted shrink to little or. nothing. nM b the international Gm Ullgtous l,(lucaun on bhM of rotunt a-homlnsinsn. )uueeed VMU features.) that the plaintiff and the defendant have lived separate and apart for more than two years tteft preced ing the brln'na; of th's r-" THE DUL'LIH 2111 Duplin County, in the Court House, in Kenansvllle, N.
