t iilss Of Paving In Three Kenfts
' The State Highway Commission
broke another all-time roadbuiio
Ing record during the third quarter
of 1950 by completing 2,282.7 miles
of secondary road paving.
" Highway Chairman Henry W.
Jordan reported today that this
mileage, added to the total finished
since ' January, 184B, represents
88.8 per cent of the 12,000-mile
paving goal requested by Governor
Scott when he took office. ... .
; During a 20-months period, the
Commission bas added 4,658.3 miles
of new hard-surfacing to the state's
secondary road system. The Com
mission's Engineer of Statistics and
Planning, James S. Burch, says
that no other roadbullding organ!
, xatlon bas paved as much as 2,282
miles in an area the sz of North
Carolina during a three-month per
iod. ' Good progress made on the $200,
000,000 program up to this point
assures Its completion within the
next 18 to 24 months barring war
time scarcities or other unforseen
conditions.
The Highway Commission's 6th
Division, led bv Dairyman George
S. Coble, reported the- greatest
portion of its program finished.
Some R64 miles already have been
paved in that division, representing
about 67 ner cent of the original
goal. Because of unexpected eco
nomics, some divisions will exceed
their brlslnal ouotaa.
As of September 10, the Com
mission had finished roughly 20
per cent of its 85,000-mile stabili
zation goal. . a.
The third quarter report from
the highway auditor's office show
ed that S95.352.110.76 of the 4125.-
000,000 in road bonds already sold
has been allocated to specific pro
jects. Of this amount 154,061,737.-
66 has been spent. .
