Smithfleld churches will join in
a union service Saturday night to
welcome Dr. S. A. Maxwell, new
pastor of ,. Centenary . Methodist
Church, so says an article in the
News & Observer of Sunday, Dec.
10. Dr." Maxwell' has gone a long
way since those early days when
he attended the old O'Daniel School
taught by the late R. D. Kornegay
and others, In the Albertson com-
- munity where he was born. Those
, school desks ' creaked under the
fceavy load of Sam asJie went about
the preparation of his lessons and
occasionally to turn around - and
whisper" to his classmates about
him. Well bright for his age, Sam
must have weighed approximately
200 pounds at the age of fourteen
and truly, the desks provided, for
the schools in those days were not
equal to Sam's heavy weight He
" was a good . student and .popular
- . with everyone about him. '
' His father, the late Frank Max
. wel has passed onbut his mother,
Mrs. Clarissa (Jones) Maxwell still
lives, with a daughter in Gelds
boro. A sister Mrs. Jeff (Connie)
Herring now' lives near the place
of their birth in Duplin County, ;

Mrs. H. E. Maxwell was hostess
to the Pink Hill HDC at her borne
Thursday afternoon. V Mrs. Leslie
Quinn presided. It was the first
meeting with the new home agent,
Miss Rachel Hartgrove In charge.
The following old officers were re
elected. Mrs.. Quinn, Pres.; Mrs.
H. E. Maxwell, Vice Pres.; and
Mrs. Nick Smith, See-Treas. Two
shut-Ins were remembered with
gifts and members exchanged sifts
