Farm Questions
' Q. Can black walnuts be started
by planting the nuts where one
wishes the trees to grow?
' A. Yes, says J. E. Ford of State
College. However, he adds walnuts
should be planted, In deep fertile
soils and not in dense shade. Black
walnut trees have a very bard time
growing on poor soils and are sub
ject to diseases on poor sites, in
fall olantlna it is not even nec
essary to remove the hull from the
nut For spring planting, the husk
should.be removed In the fall and
the nuts stratified over winter. To
stratify, dig a hole about the size
of a bushel basket in a well-drained
spot. Jn the bottom put a layer of
nA about an Inch thick, tnen a
layer of nuts. Alternate layers, of II

Procedure On Combination and
Division of Farms in 1981 - Where
a farm is beine divided in 1D51 and
the farm has been combined during
the past five years (1046 through
1450). the allotment may be divided
on a cropland basis or in the same
proportion that each tract contri
buted to the allotment at the time
of the combination. Where a farm
is being divided and such farm was
combined prior to IMS or the farm
has remained as one farming unit
since the beginning of the program,
the division will be made on tne
percentage of cropland basis.
All tracts of land owned and
operated as one farming unit. Any ,
part of a farm cash rent to another
operator shall remain a part of the
original farm or be treated as a
separate unit, depending upon the
circumstances involved.. The defi
nition of a farm permits combina
tion of tracts only when owned by
the same person; therefore combi
nations of land cash rented by an !
operator with land owned by him
will not be permitted.' Under no j
circumstances will the State Com
mittee approve the combination of
any farm for marketing quota pur-
