The present taxes on cigarettes
amount to approximately 33 1-3
of the retail cost and 50 of the
wholesale tet.-e:.: w. '.. s. .
The rata of tax already levied
on cigarettes yield an amount of
money in excess of the total amount
iivid bv the farmers from the
gala of the tdbacco crop, even at
prevailing prices. f.1-,,;..,-:
In 1940' and In 1942. to-called
Emergency Tax was added to the
existing tax rate on cigarettes.
Thprw was no reduction after the
wr hi this tax. which was necess
ary because of the emergency re
sulting from World War II.
; in the odnlon of the Board, the
proposed Increase in the tax could
and probably wouia result in uw
miruiied use of the product and
such curtailment could and prob
ably would affect the economy ox
the millions of people whose live
lihood is dependent upon this in
dustry. " ' "- '-; : 1 '
The imposition oi tnis aaaea ux

DBiievine that the imposition of
the proposed tax adds an unjust
and discriminatory burden to this
product and Is likely to curtail the
demand therefor and this adversely
affect the welfare of a great portion
f 4ib citizens of the State, we
earnestly request the members of
Congress from North Carolina to
oppose, by every legitimate means
and argument the imposition of
this Increased tax. .
