29 (rather than 5) gallons of liquor
into or through the state's felony
punishable In. the court's discret
ion (rather than by 5 to 10 years
imprisonment). Another would add
a 500 additional or alternative fine
to the original penalty of 5 months
to 5 years in jail for obtaining a fe
deral license to manufacture, pur
chase, or handle intoxicants. The
proposal to add 25 enforcement of
ficers tothe State ' ABC Board's
staff and give the entire staff state
wide jurisdiction passed the Senate
with- only clarifying amendments.

$73,000 to establish a state civil
defense program. Under the gene
ral direction and control of the gov
ernor, a director of civil defense

other states and the federal gov
ernments In. the event of war or
imminat hostile action, the gover
nor could take over direct operat
ional control and enter into recipro-;
-al aid agreements. Mobile support
units to supplement civil defense
organizations in stricken areas are
provided, ' and local political sub
divisions are authorized to make
apropratlons and levy taxes for
civil defense purposes.
Bonus fdr Veterans
The bill to provide a referendum
on raising liquor taxes to pay vet
erans' bonuses, supported visibly
on Monday by the presence of some
300 people, has been given a pub
lic hearing followed by an unfavo
rable report. Another bill to pro
vide bonuses for veterans of World
War 11 only was introduced Fri
day, but its chances are equally
poor.

of the late Mr. and Mrs. Owen Tho
mas Bostic of Warsaw. She Is a grad
uate of the Masonic Home in Ox
ford, graduating in 1949, and has
been employed at the Carolina Te
lephone and Telegraph Co. in War
saw for the past year and a half.
The bridegroom in the son of
Mrs. Henry Street Kornegay Sr.
and the late Mr. Kornegay of War
saw. He graduatel from the Warsaw
Schools in 1949 and is now attend
ing Light and Heavy Weapon In
fantry Leadership School in Ft. Ben
ning, Ga.
; Mrs. Kornegay returned from
her wedding trip on Tuesday and
will remain in her present employ
ment for the time being.

Mrs. Callie Lanier Maready, 59,
died at her home in Kinston Sun
day after a lingering illness. Funer
al services were held from the
home at 2 p. m. Monday, conducted
by Rev. Mr. Lyles, Free Will Holi
ness minister of Kinston. Interment
followed in the Maplewood Ceme
tery there.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs.
Ruby Matthews of Kinston, with
whom she made her home; four
grandchildren; three brothers, I. G.
Lanier of Bowden, G. A. Lanier of
