Vegetables Top June Food List Fresh vegetables will be tat the top of the shopping order in June, Miss Alta Lawson, county home agent tor the State College Ex tension Service, said this week in listing foods that will be plentiful for the month in the Southeast. Miss (Lawson explained that June is a month when locally grown fresh vegetables reach volume pro duction. From nearby garden and truck areas, markets will receive such vegetables as caWbage, lettuce, potatoes, green beans, spinach, to matoes, and others. Unless unfav orable weaither upsets production, these locally produced vegetables will be among the best food buys for June. In addition to fresh vegetables, markets will 'feature pdenty of or anges, canned apples and apple sauce, canned citrus juices, peanut butter, dry beans, cottage cheese, broilers, and fish. The 195051 packs of canned ap- files and 'applesauce are reoord arge. Recent chick placements in the major broiler areas indicate re tail supplies of (brouers and fry ers may also reach record propo re ons in June, WARSAW, N.C. THURS. FRI. JUNE 7-8 With Larry Parks and Barbara Hale Cartoon SAT. JUNE 9 paiUp With Charles Starrett With Charles Starrett Kill Or Be Killed NOTES production For Today And Tomorrow How much higher can farm pro duction be pushed? ' Haw much more can our acres be made to yield. The prosperity and strength of our country depends on the ans wer, says Henry S. Tyndall, Chair man of the Duplin County PMA Committee, "for only as agricul ture is kept strong and productive can the Nation be strong and grow ing." In the chairman' -vords, "The national emergency which calls for all out production from our farms emphasizes more than ever the ur gency of doing all we can to make sure our land will keep on produc ing an abundance of the food and fiber required for a strong coun try. Even greater production will be needed in the future to keep pace with an increasing population. Next year defense requirements may well ibe greater than this year. All of this. he points out. adds up to the necessity of more and better soil and water conservation as a foundation for the other things whkfti can he done to step up farm production. Land that hag been denuded of its topsoll or out to pieces with gullies is in no cond cVltton for the kind of production needed. Neither will land that has the organic matter worked out of It be in good condition for this needed production as land that has been built up by green manure and rotation pastures. The need to push production hi gher, in the chairman's opinion, only emphasizes the need for ex panding conservation work, and the extorts under the Agricultural con servation program are in this direc tion. He explains that the program encburaises and assists farmers in carrying out practices that check erosion, restore fertility to the soil and makes more efficient use of water. The program is in operation in every agricultural county and community in the country. In the chairman's words, "Be cause continued production is of suoh importance to the welfare of the country, the Nation snares in the cost of the conservation prac tices carried out. It is a program Where the Nation and its farmers work together to build a strong de fense aad a stiong country. Tobacco Meauicment In The County The measurement of tobacco ac reage is now getting underway in the county. The reporters are tur ning in their reports and seem to be gettin-? off to a ?ood start. The office will keep up with the figur ing and mail notices to the pro ducers as soon as possible. Let's all help get the job compHed. Applications Open Highway Patrolmen Raleigh, N. C.
