Farmers of the State, plagued by crop diseases, have been sending in plant specimens at the rate of about SO to 100 per week. Most of these have been tobacco which has been hit hard by black shank and a number of other ailments. . J. H. Jenson, who heads up the college's plant disease work, says that by the end of the season, some thing like 1,500 letter covering di. sease diagnosis will have been writ ten. Although free diagnostic and consultation service has been avail . able on an informal basis for many; years, the plant disease clinic was operated on a formal basis this summer for the first time: Under the new plan, 16 staff mem bers take turns at conducting the clinic for a week at a time. Their Nearly half of all the eggs pro duced in the world are laid by U. S. hens. For the last six years, the average American has been eating eggs at the rate of more than one a day. Field tests in 1950 indicated that the better lines of burley tobacco with resistance to wildfire were comparable to The best standard commercial varieties in yield, qual ity, and returns per acre.
