Over 600 meetings were held and many needs were enumerated, but throughout . the state in practically every county, rural people expressed the desire for an expanded rural telephone program. The demand for telephone service Is Indicated by a recent statement of Governor W. Kerr Scott that "of all the many and varied requests for assistance com ing to the Governor's office, re quests for assistance in securing rural telephone service and ex presalons of appreciation for as sitnance rendered head the list." The North Carolina Rural Elec trification Authority of which Gwyn B. Price Is Chairman la au thorised to assist rural groups in securing electric service. .Fuller says that the North Caro lina Rural Electrifies Uon Authori ty has a ten-point program and that tremendous progress towards state-wide rural telephone service may be had through this program as follows: l. Recognition by all of state wide neea ror rural teiepnone serv ice and its potential contribution to better rural living and community and state development 2. Encouraging existing com panies to recognize their privilege franchise and manifest sincere ef fort to provide area service. 3. Assumption of responsibility by rural home owners to subscribe to telephone service in order that efficient, adequate and profitable service may be provided. 4. Maximum use of latest tele -phone service Research and encour agement of continued and expand ed research looking toward effi cient rural communication through radio, wireless, use of power lines or other efficient mean. 5. County and community sur veys with plotted maps giving names and addresses and showing where and how much service is ( needed. Support and action programs' ui rarra Bureau, orange, home demonstration groups, PTA, civic groups, electric membership cor porations, Kurai Electrification Ad ministration, and county officials in securing rural telephone service. 7. Close coordination between the North Varolina Rural Klortrl. fica.ion Authority and North Caro lina Utilities Commission In deve loping an efficient rural telephone program. 8. L. Wynn, dairy specialist of A. and T. College and the State College Extension Serv ice. ' Four new shows were added this year, bringing the total .number to 12. As a result, the number of animals exhibited rose from 472 in 1930 :o 647 this year. This was an aver ee of 54 animals per show, i Blue ribbons were awarded to ! 200 animals, red ribbons to 294, and white ribbons to 153. All were chambers of commerce, junior chambers of commerce, other ci vic organizations, and business con cern. Interested .Individuals along with schools and colleges also con tributed to the program. A total of $5,660.94 was donated for premiums, banquets, special awards and other, expenses.
