Already the second-largest pro ducer In the United States the Tungsten Mining Corporation is now building new xacuuies to dou ble production before iroz out. .. . ,''.''. ! The company is currently work ing two shifts six days a week in this Vance County mine 18 miles northwest of Henderson. It Is bringing up 400 tons of ore a day. The crushing mm, wnere three shifts are on the Job seven days a week, processes about 325 tons a day.. The rest is stockpiled. By July, when the new crushing mill. under construction around the old one is scheduled to begin op eration, the plant will be able to refine over 600 tons of ore a day. About October, new steel head frames, hoists, ore-bins, and skips (.buckets which bring up the ore) at the two working shafts will be lifting larger quantities of tungsten-bearing rock to feed the grow ing appetite of the mill. The new mill also will recover a higher portion of tungsten min erals from the ore. Just to look at It the town of Tungsten, North Carolina, isn't im pressive. The headframes at the two shafts, 4,000 feet apart the crushing mill strung along a hill side, arid a few small building! including one which houses the post office and a grocery store make up the town. A total of 345 persons. Including staff members work here. But Tungsten, on a long ridge in this slightly rolling land near where the North Carolina Piedmont blends into the Coastal Plain, is a big spot on the map of the Nation al Munitions Board. Again, as in World War II when working of the deposit here was started after foreign sources of tungsten .were pinched off, vital tungsten from Vance County is pouring into America's increasing preparedness effort. In slightly more than nine years of production. Tungsten Mining has produced con centrates containing more than 4,- 500,000 pounds of pure tungsten. Actually, tungsten is not found in the pure form in nature, but in combination with other elements. The most abundant of these tung sten-bearing minerals, known as co:--centrates, in the mine here are huebnerite, with a usuable tung- Dobson Chapel Rev. N. E. In its first monthly W summary of traffic violations for 0 the new year the Department re- A ported 3,851 speeding convictions; 2,208 convictions for reckless driv ing and 1438 for driving without an operator's permit. For 'failing to stop for a stop lan or red liffht 644 motorists were convicted: 305 answered charges for driving with Improper lights; 228 were caught and convicted for pass ing on hills and curves; and 112 were convicted for falling to give a hand signal. Failing to give right - of - way brought 104 convictions. Miscel laneous violations carried the month's total to 10,211.
