Cartoon . y.', Saturday, March 29 Lady From Texas Starring Mona Freeman and - . .'Howard Duff v 2 Ortoons and Serial Good healthy chicks that's the aim of every poultryman. But get ting good healthy chicks is some thing else. Unless the poultryman starts with . good stock and exer cises good brooding practices, he is likely to fail The care given to. chicks should be the beat, even when the falser must devote much time and labor to the project. There are many brooding point ers which advise the raiser what to do before the chicks arrive, when they arrive, and after they get start ed. Here are a few recommenda tions considered, particularly- im portant: ;. . Heating the Brooder Hense The day before you expect your chicks, start a fire in the brooder stove or turn on the electric brood er. - The house should be warm before chicks are brought Into their new quarters. ' Keep the humidity In the brooder house hkgh for the first several days. A pan of water placed on the stove should help provide extra moisture. Remember that chicks will dry out if the temperature is high and the humidity low. r. . . , Curing the first day and evening keep a close watch over your chicks Make sure they find feed and wat er. If chicks are too dose to the stove .they probably are cold. If they push against the chick guard they are too hot. Adjust tempera ture to keep chicks warm and com fortable. . Other Suggestions It is also a good idea to provide chicks with a small amount of light during the night It helps the chicks bed down evenly. However, the light should not be too bright or the chicks will begin eating. A 5-watt bulb is satisfactory under most conditions. Frh air and sunlight are also important to growing chicks. There should be some circulation of air at au times, but avoid drafts. Sun light Is not only a source of vitamin D, but It also serves to some extent as a -disinfectant. Green feeds, such as lawn clip pings, sprouted oats, and vesetable greens, may be fed to chicks after J me nrst week. The cost of living is now the nignest.in history and prices of consumer 'goods and services are expected to continue going up. For this reason, say specialists of the State College Extension Service, North Carolina farm families may make more money in 1052 than in laoi, out iney ii orobablv have leu ro spena on memselves.
