IOOOOOOOOOOOI
The summer fisherman is fam
iliar with the bloom of a fresh
water pond, which he shrugs off
as one of these things to wait oni
But when the ocean decides to
break out into bloom, such as the
"red tide,-- he is apt to get a bit
hysterical and feel sure that his
fishing is doomed. It isn't ,
Certain phases of this phenom
enon, which occurs in many parts
of the world kills millions on mill
ions of fish. Some of them sink to
the bottom. Others mass on the
surface, carried by .wind and tide
to form great area of bloated decay.
Since the outbreak of red tide
in the Gulf of Mexico in 1947, the
U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service has
been carrying on a research pro
ject to find out its cause, to learn
how to predict its outbreak, and
especially how to disperse its kill
ing power.
We know the sea 'swarms with
minute organisms called dinoflag
ellates. When some combination of
events changes the water, these
micro - organisms suddenly incre
ase by the billions to disrupt the
nature of the sea. Though similar
phenomenon has occurred up and
down the Atlantic and Pacific coa
sts., it has not generally resulted
in the killing of fish as has out
breaks of red tide off the south'
west coast of Florida.
Scientists have observed, accord
ing to correspondent Michael Hud
h. r ihit h tida. occurred after
a period of abnormally heavy rain
fall followed by a smn irom on
shore to onshore winds. This ac-
Mimiilataa a.maga of low - Salinity
water which is kept from moving
seaward by the wind, in mis ma
there is a microbe that explodes
into bloom and changes into a
form that is apparently poisonous
to fish. ' - .
n.. ut tIHa Hlsannears almost
as fast as it bursts into existence.
The big question is where xnis mi
crobe, which '.vanishes when the
iiiini ran he found. The
scientists have searched the Gulf of
Mexico from surface to, Donom
every month of the year without
luckr They now . suspect that it
might be found in the rivers or in
the mud of the marshes.
Ti.ni tho nrnhlem of the red tide
continues to be studied by the Fish
and Wildlife Service. Anglers sho
uld be patient and remember that
hinlnoioaT research is not like a'
comet burst but a constant day-to-i4o
eturiv often tedious and ex
hausting, which probes the secrets'
nature is so reluctant 10 give up.
