You can barely see mature females of some species. We have many types of nematodes in our soils. , Some : are. harmless . while others are parasites on plants. There are two important groups of nematode parasites of tobacco. Reams says: , root knot nematodes and meadow nematodes. These pests feed and reproduce . in ' the roots of a wide variety of plants and live from year to year in the soil and decaying roots. "When you " grow tobacco and other susceptible crops continuously in infested soil. the nematode population increases until you lose money by growing such crops," he states. When nematodes pierce the root tissue "and begin feeding, various types of injuries occur; Roots attacked -by. root ' knot nematodes develop either! 11UJT (MU UU UW JWUM, WU.t. may not be seen unless carefully observed, or medium to large galls and swellings which is recognized as "big root' or root knot.
